WIBU to take DD out now (chicken pox related)

DD1 got chicken pox last week. First spot Wednesday night, properly started Thursday lunch time. I don't think I've seen new spots in days.

As far as I can see all the spots that had blisters have crusted over, or the blister part has died out and gone solid. And as far as I know that means ok to emerge from quarantine.

BUT... There are a few small red dots that have been there for days (some since the very beginning) that never developed a blister, but haven't gone away yet.

WIBU to consider her out of the contagious period now or am I hunkering down for another couple of days until something happens with those little spots?

(Before the flaming starts about going out with chicken pox, we've kept her home since we realised what it was and while it would be nice to get out, I have absolutely no intention of it if she's still contagious, I just don't know if she is or not)

I don't think you will be particularly contagious now so I would go out. (I am GP and would say ok.)

r3dsquirrel · 01/10/2013 22:31

The infectious stage of chickenpox lasts between 5-10 days so she may well still be infectious (particularly if she has lesions that havent yet scabbed over). Id suggest following the standard advice of waiting until all lesions have scabbed over or disappeared.

r3dsquirrel · 01/10/2013 22:37

(Posted too early) or until 10 days have passed since the onset of her symptoms.

vvviola · 01/10/2013 22:38

That's what has me confused though. Some of the spots never formed blisters, they are just red dots, so there's nothing to scab over, if you see what I mean. That's why I'm unsure.

Are you sure those spots are CP or could they be bites.

vvviola · 01/10/2013 22:49

I'm pretty sure they're CP - they came up at the same time as the "typical" CP spots, but just didn't seem to develop into the blister stage.

Musicaltheatremum has said take her out now and I think as a GP she knows what she's talking about.

WidowWadman · 02/10/2013 07:02

HPA say 5 days from onset of rash, so you should be fine.

Trazzletoes · 02/10/2013 07:07

Erm, I have a child with a compromised immune system so generally get quite touchy about things like these - thank you for asking the question OP, I have no idea of the answer am afraid but was wondering what exactly "not particularly contagious" is quantified as. Surely you are either contagious or not (from my DS' point of view).

grobagsforever · 02/10/2013 07:33

I feel your pain OP. On day four of house arrest here and already going spare. Any tips for making it through the next few days? Is your DC still in a buggy? If so a walk with her strapped in should be ok?

vvviola · 02/10/2013 07:34

Well that's it, Trazzletoes, I'd hate to take her out thinking it was all ok, and to infect someone like your DC.

As it was we stayed home today other than a quick circuit of the block on her scooter when I knew we wouldn't run into anyone (I do that route every day, and in over a year have never seen anyone else do it...)

Tomorrow she'll be home with DH while he works so no chance of going out then. So Friday is the next opportunity to go out, by which time it will be 9 days since the first spot and the little red dots should hopefully have done something or faded Grin

Trazzletoes - isn't it the blisters that are particularly contagious, so maybe if they are crusted over and there's just these little spots, there's less chance of contagion. I don't know.

Grobagsforever, she's 6. Well past the buggy stage, although she'd chance her arm at getting into her sisters if she could Grin

(DD2 is 2, and probably due to get it next week. She'll be a trickier proposition)

Hiya,

I am normally of the 'don't take them anywhere' disposition (and didn't take mine anywhere though it was bloody difficult!) but I recognise what you are describing - both of mine had a lot of spots that 'started', but never got anywhere because basically their immune system has already nixed them before they could develop.

They just disappeared in the end.
I would think you are safe to take her out now given the timescale since it started.
