To want to ban over-bright headlights

mmmdonuts · 01/10/2013 21:31

AArrghhh it's that time of year again, when some drivers usually of the high-spec car-driver kind are complete dicks on the road and turn on their high beams when it's barely dark.

I am so tired of being blinded either in my rear-view mirror, or even worse, head-on. I know I shouldn't but I've had to tip up my rear-view mirror as seeing the beams there is so distracting and hurts my eyes - I can see the headlights perfectly well in the black reflection of the mirror from the roof, if that makes sense.

Why don't the highway police/council take more action on this? Some of the headlights are so dazzling you can barely see the road, and it would be one way of raking in money from drivers who can clearly afford to piss away money on stupidly bright xenon bulbs Angry

Donuts- you do realise that rear view mirrors are meant to be used like that? There are actually 2 reflections in the mirror. One clear one which you use the majority of the time. And one faint reflection which is to be used if a driver behind is dazzling you. At the bottom of the mirror is a little switch, flick it and the mirror automatically adjusts so instead of viewing the car in the clear reflection, you see it in the dim reflection.

On the rest, YANBU. Gives me a headache too.

CrohnicallyLurking · 01/10/2013 21:40

Oh, and while we're on the subject of main beams, what is with the other group of motorists who refuse to use theirs ever? There are a number of rural, unlit roads near where I live. It's very frustrating when you get stuck behind a driver doing 15-20mph in a 60 zone, they are crawling along because they can't see because they're not using their main beams. And you can't overtake because you can't see either because they're not using their main beams and you don't want to turn yours on and dazzle them!

CreatureRetorts · 01/10/2013 21:41

I did not know that about rear view mirrors!!!

Oh YANBU op.

mmmdonuts · 01/10/2013 21:41

Seriously? Shock how did I not know that about the mirror? Will have a little play tomorrow.

YANBU - while you're at it can we get stabby on all the people who have their fog lights on permanently or when there is the merest wisp of mist

TidyDancer · 01/10/2013 21:43

This is a major bugbear of mine. Well, it's more than a bugbear since it's fucking dangerous.

I've nearly driven off the road many times due to being blinded by xenon bulbs. When I'm on narrow lanes I have to pull right over and slow right down as I just can't see when they're coming towards me.

member · 01/10/2013 21:44

I knew that about the mirror & I still think YANBU because on-coming xenon headlights are blinding!

CrohnicallyLurking · 01/10/2013 21:45

And can we get stabby at the people who don't use fog lights when it's a pea souper out there?

Is it really that hard to learn to turn a light on and off appropriately?

mmmdonuts · 01/10/2013 21:45

To be fair, someone behind me in a huge 4x4 did turn off their headlights when I started doing hand signals to her near my mirror. It was bright daylight. I was impressed by her interpretation of my sign language Grin

I have shouted at a boy racer in a BMW before that his lights were too bright. He just replied 'Yeah I know' Confused

trixymalixy · 01/10/2013 21:48

Yy to the drivers that have their fog light on permanently and those who crawl along on country roads because they can't see where they ate going because that haven't got full beam on.

I can't say that I've ever been that bothered by over bright headlights, but I'm sure it'll be one of those things that now it's been pointed out to me I'll see it all the time ! Grin

DanielMcSpaniel · 01/10/2013 21:49

I totally agree about the headlights but I am slightly bemused that anyone doesn't know about the rear view mirror switch. I thought that was basic knowledge.

trixymalixy · 01/10/2013 21:49

CrohnicallyLurking · 01/10/2013 21:51

Thank goodness other people knew about the mirror. For a moment I thought I'd imagined it!

nickelbabe · 01/10/2013 21:51

yanbi.

the worst are those new type that are on high vehicles like mpvs.

they're ansolutely blindin. might as well have full beam on.

nickelbabe · 01/10/2013 21:54

I know about the mirror switch but only learned it when I moved to the country. no one ever tells you!

enjoyingscience · 01/10/2013 21:54

YANBU at all, it drives me mad. Such selfish, dangerous behaviour. I think a lot of the time it isn't even cars with their full beam on, it's just idiots who think mega bright headlights make their car look shinier. Rah.

The rear view switch is handy, but on a motorway they get you in the side view mirrors too. Arseholes.

Dawndonnaagain · 01/10/2013 21:56

I think (she said carefully) that it is actually illegal to have your fog lights on at inappropriate times. I'm not too sure about this but have vague recollections of a police officer telling me so.
Can't believe people don't know how to adjust their rear view mirror, though. Maybe it's because I'm old.

mmmdonuts · 01/10/2013 21:58

My driving instructor never told me about the switch and I did Pass Plus! He was a bit shite though.

Yeah, I think fog lights when unneccessary is illegal too.

Selks · 01/10/2013 22:00

I had no idea about the rear view mirror switch! Do all cars have this?

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2013 22:02

having juts driven 28 miles on country roads tonight I would agree Sad

MurderOfBanshees · 01/10/2013 22:04

YANBU, I know there was a petition at some point to ban the really bright ones. Last I heard the manufacturers of them were claiming they never ever made it dangerous for other road users/made it difficult to see through the glare. Uh-huh.. and not biased at all. Hmm

Here you go, Lightmare

FrillyMillylovesPollosHermanos · 01/10/2013 22:07

Are you sure it's people with their full beam on though? I find on new cars the lights are really bright and people seem to forget to dip them. It only really bothers me on the motorway.

DanielMcSpaniel · 01/10/2013 22:07

I'm actually shocked people don't know! I knew as a child watching my parents driving. It never occurred to me that it's not in common and constant use.
