aibu in thinking british gas should just let us pay our gas bill? We moved in in may paid one bill to the occupier and then opened our own account which they have,nt sent us any bills for, but keep sending increasingly threatening letters to the occupier the last one said if you don't pay we will basically break in and turn off your supply [they supply gas and electric] we have tried to pay on many occasions to pay, but they just say ignore the bills to the occupier and wait for your own. They have admitted its there cock up but said we have to trust there system and I don't think I do trust there system aibu?

Call and threaten you will go to ofgem they will put you straight to conplaints who have a far better track record of actually getting to the bottom of and fixing problems. Have you had anything even a letter in your name sounds like they havent completed the homemove correctly.

Also they need a warrant from magistrates to force entry they cant take 'The Occupier' to court so you should be fine in that respect.

Nothing in our name but I,m worried about coming home and finding our gas and electric cut off and prepayment meters installed. We had a really bad experience with united utilities a few years back who insisted we owed them£2000 pounds but could never say how or why eventually after getting the ombudsman involved it turned out that somebody had put a decimal point in the wrong place and they owed us that's why I don't trust utility firms and there systems!

They will eventually send a letter detailing the date and time of the magistrates court hearing for the issue of the warrant advising 'The Occupier' they are invited to attend the hearing. You could always go along I suppose but the magistrate will not issue a warrant on an occupier account.

Best course of action go through British Gas complaints procedure as by entering into complaints procedure the account should be put on hold anyway so no further collections action until resolved. If they cant resolve it in a reasonable time period go through ombudsman. You need to prove you have exhausted BG's complaints procedure before they will take over your case. Make sure BG give you a timeframe for sorting problem, the minute that passes without a resolution get onto the ombudsman.

Change suppliers. I recommend EDF.

British Gas have set the debt collectors on me twice for bills run up after I'd moved out of a property. The first time I'd called up to tell them I'd moved and had an account with them at my new place so they should have at least known how to contact me before they set the dogs on me. The second time my name wasn't even on the account because I refused to have any dealings with me. Over a year later I got a letter from the debt collectors while my housemate who was the account holder didn't get one.

yes may well switch supplier queenstromba but just want to pay the sodding bill arrgh!

They'll probably sort it out quite quickly once you set the supplier transfer in motion in the hope that you might change your mind.

We had a reasonably similar situation recently with threatening letters sent to "the occupier" while our house was empty and on the market.

Keep records of your meter readings and the dates/times you've spoken to British Gas.

They cannot take any action against "the occupier", particularly as those bills tend to be estimated.

It took them months to set up an account for us to charge us precisely nothing for the time between our tenant moving out and our buyer completing on the purchase.

Keep an eye on your usage as you will be billed for it eventually, but I think you can relax as your details slowly work their way through the system. If you'd rather be more active, call and bag regularly.

They won't be taking you to court or breaking in any time soon.

IShallWearMidnight · 02/10/2013 10:15

BG have been trying to charge us on a domestic rate, us on a business rate and the landlord on god knows what rate for gas which they don't supply and partly for a period when there was no gas meter in the property - which they knew as they are the only ones who can install meters Shock.

Everytime we get a stroppy reminder we ring them up, explain the whole saga, tell them it's on their records somewhere, they tell us it will be sorted out and just to ignore the letters. But it seems the business helpline people can't talk to the domestic helpline people who can't talk to the meter installation team who can't get a stop put on the reminder letters OR find someone senior enough to deal with it. And still the stroppy letters arrive.

I'm just keeping a big file and hoping it all goes away Grin.

BigKidsMadeMeDoIt · 02/10/2013 10:24

BG are currently threatening me with a magistrate's warrant to remove a meter that they themselves removed 2 years ago from a flat that no longer exists bangs head on desk

we knocked two separate flats (A and B) into one flat, now called flat A. the council signed off on it, for council tax/electoral roll etc but BG don't seem to be able to get it into their heads after almost 2 years of telling them.

but good luck to the bailiff that tries to enter the mythical flat B.

x2boys · 02/10/2013 17:21

that made me laugh bigkids why is it so damn difficult they say the occupier letters are not ours so don't pay them but I am the occupier and I have been using gas and electricity ????? confused?
