AIBU to have the rage over 'sorry, the site is offline - we'll be back as soon as possible.'

It's happening more and more. To the point where I am expecting it to happen. Why? Just WHY?

Is it my computer or is MN spectacularly crap at handling traffic or whatever the reason is for it?

They might give you some feedback if you posted in the right place. And if its really giving you the rage you might want to close the computer and go do something else for a while.

Yes YANBU! I don't come on here that much anymore but every time I decide I I will have 30 5 minutes to lurk the "offline" things always happens! I thought they might have been trying to tell me something!

GobTheGoblin · 01/10/2013 17:12

YANBU I'm getting fed up of it as well.

Patilla · 01/10/2013 17:24

Happens a lot to me, I'm afraid, too.

Sometimes a simple refresh works sometimes it's much longer.

I'll report the thread to draw it to mn towers' attention.

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/10/2013 17:28

I'd prefer it if the message said 'sorry we're just having gin and cake, back soon.' At least it'd be true giggle worthy.

greensmoothiegoddess · 01/10/2013 18:42

Haha - that'd be great wembley!

Aha, thought it was my computer, phew!!!!!!!

I thought it was a feature.

I nearly started the same thread the other day. Honestly, it's every two minutes at the moment. I throught at first it was something to do with being in a different time zone (East Coast US) but even if I log in during the UK daytime here, it's invariably down.

Pet hate: writing a post and then it disappearing. So... frustrating! Particularly since I come on Mumsnet for half an hour or so when DD is sleeping and then can't get back to something later.

mumof5plusazoo · 01/10/2013 19:43

Yanbu, it's happening more and more to me too.

Hi, Sorry this is a pain. Often when you get this message the site isn't actually offline - it's just that the one of the servers didn't respond in time to prevent another one of the servers thinking that if was offline - usually because one or other of them is very busy.

We are in the process of adding more servers to alleviate this, and changing one of our underlying software products on the application servers to prevent it altogether. BUT, that is a huge change and we need to do some extensive testing to make sure it's all going to work properly and that we won't make things worse.

SO, please bear with us. If you get the offline message try clicking reload or hitting refresh. It will often work.

We'll also make a more immediate change so that if the site is really up (ie not down for actual maintenance) the message says something like "temporary problem please try again" rather than the offline message. If it's actually down, we'll make it say so.

Hope this helps at least partly explain what's going on.
