To not expect to have to pay for this repair?

The jewellers I bought my ring from finally rang today to say that my ring has been assessed as being customer damaged and that I will have to pay £89 for it to be repaired.

The ring had been worn for 3 months when I noticed 2 diamonds missing from the shoulder, I have been careful not to wear the ring for gardening, decorating etc and definitely do not recall it being knocked or damaged in any way. I stated this when I took it in to the jewellers.

The ring had to be sent back to the manufacturer to be assessed, they told me 3 weeks max, it has been over 4. If I do pay for it to be repaired they have said it needs to be recast and it will be another 4 weeks until I get it back. Does recast basically mean a new ring?

AIBU to be pissed of that I'm expected to pay for a repair to a ring that is only 3 months old and that has just been worn as you would expect to wear a ring and for it not to become damaged?

I'd be contacting the local trading standards.

was your ring sized? Any ring I have was sized down and every ring with stones had to go back to have stones replaced as they fell out' it is apparently common. I never had to pay to have them repaired.

Canyou, yes it was resized down 1 size. The store assistant said this was fine to do but from googling a bit I've found that resizing pave set rings can cause problems.

The manufacturers are saying the ring was out of shape and has obviously been damaged. I had not noticed it being out of shape, 2 of the claws that hold the diamonds were missing and I have no idea how this could have happened.

I really begrudge paying for the repair when I'm not convinced it was my fault, and with the ring being so new. Think I will check out what trading standards say and also maybe get a second opinion form an independent jewellers.

Also is 4 weeks for a ring to be assessed then another 4 weeks for repair normal?

Yes, we purposely paid with a credit card for extra protection, although not sure how this actually works. I also have insurance for it so now thinking might be better going through them. The customer service I've received has been terrible, I'm tempted to just try and get a refund, but I really loved the design of the ring.

many now only sell and repairs are not done on site so it can take a week or two. Sizing down reshapes the ring and can pull the claws so they weaken. The ring I wanted for my engagement could not be downsized with out sealing so they would not sell it to us Sad . The jeweller was my cousin. Trading standards and go in and ask for the expert jeweller to speak to you and explain why it is not their fault or ask for a report

canyou · 30/09/2013 22:17

*without weakening
Also check if they are precious stones that the precious stones are actually used, My Aunts engagement ring had the ruby replacedSad it was when she went home her Dsis noticed, she involved police apparently it is commonShock

Almostfifty · 30/09/2013 22:18

I ended up with a new ring eight months after we'd got my eternity ring, as I had lost three stones out of it. The jeweller just gave me a new one there and then without me asking them to.

Contact Trading Standards.

I bought ring which the stones kept falling out. Sent it bk three times and ladt time it was a completely diff size!got refund and never went back there.
I dont think in three months that its acceptable, i would not be paying.

msmorgan · 30/09/2013 22:20

It's a high street chain and tbh the shop assistants seem clueless when it comes to anything technical. They could not tell me what having the ring recast involved or if having it resized could have caused a problem.

I think the problem I have is that the manufacturer is saying I caused the damage, I cannot think how I could have but I assume it is my word against theirs.

When I noticed the missing stones and went to the store I had expected them to be apologetic and just for the ring to be replaced. I wasn't happy that it might just be repaired, I'm now fuming that I'm expected to pay for it!

Do they begin with d?

msmorgan · 02/10/2013 12:38

No, not a D. I'll not name them in case I am in the wrong!

I have emailed back and forth with the head office and they've basically said they can either send me the ring back to get an independent assessment, but that it will take up to 4 weeks for me to receive the ring, or they will repair it and I pay for it.

I have put a claim through our insurance, I'm really annoyed that I will have no ring for possibly over 2 months.
