To ask how best to mark a strike on a day when I am not working?

I never work Thursdays, being only part time. A non teaching acquaintance claims that I can't think much of the cause if I won't give my time to it. I explained that the school is closed, there is no picket line for me to be on and really it's a non event for me. How should you withdraw labour you were not providing? Should I have a T-shirt made? If so, what should it say? Should I make a banner and stand outside of the school despite the entrance being in a residential area with little traffic except for the pupils' parents so no one would see me? Or, shall I just post on FB pictures of me having a manicure on the big day? Having been subjected to enormous amounts of FB vitriol by this person, I fancy the latter! Ten nails leaves just enough room for "Fuck U Gove!". After all!

Enormous amounts of FB vitriol from this friend? Then why do you give a damn what she thinks, and more to the point, why is she your friend?

I don't work on Thursdays either but def support the cause. on the last strike, I took my dd to the city and we joined the rally. There will be one near you probably.

Where to go if you feel you want to show your support.

Turniptwirl · 30/09/2013 20:28

Do you care about the cause? If you do then find a local rally. If not or if you have child are issues etc then just do what you normally do on S Thursday and don't give in to the guilt trip

You could donate your wages to charity for this week.

CaptainSweatPants · 30/09/2013 20:48

Thought it was tomorrow not Thursday?

The obvious answer is go on a march or join a picket line at a school that has one

iismum · 30/09/2013 20:50

Donate one-day's worth of salary to the union?

DrSeuss · 30/09/2013 21:26

Don't think it's legal to picket somewhere that's not my own workplace, is it?

That's awful! Shock - I'm not in all honesty sure how much difference this strike is going to make and while I support it in principle I do not feel a strike is helping our cause at all at this stage. Ignore her! xx

If you really want to mark it you could always donate 1/260th of your earnings to your teaching union. You would forfeit the money if you went on strike and as you can't you should forfeit it still and allow your union to benefit so they can carry on the cause. Matter of principle really and not sure why you are asking.
