Not to want to go to Sharm, Turkey or Tunisia this winter?

We've just started thinking about going away for a holiday at christmas with the kids 7 &4 for some winter sun. DH has suggested Sharm el Sheik which we've been to before years ago. Due to the unrest in the country I'm not keen- although Cairo is a days travel away. It was too hot for us last time and I'm not a good flier either.
I feel that we could have a perfectly good holiday somewhere nearer, and safer that would mean I wouldn't be stressing out and so we'd all be able to relax.
I've checked the FO website to the above countries and I appreciate some parts are safe, I don't want to chance it. It could all change by december. We haven't the money to go further or to book a holiday we can't take.
I'd prefer the Canaries as they're closer and we like all things Spanish. Last time we went to Lanzarote at xmas it rained and this has put DH off.

AIBU to want an easier life and not worry about the hols, or am I using the travel advice as an excuse not to have an adventure? Or has anyone got any alternative winter sun ideas?
I want to look forward to taking a break not dreading it.

Get together some holiday packages and present them to DH and then agree on something.
Tell him to do the same.
Compromise though - Canaries is still quite a long flight.

The Canaries will be warmer than Turkey at Christmas I imagine but I think the weather in Sharm would be perfect, certainly would be too hot that time of year.

The last time we wanted guaranteed winter sun we went to the Caribbean but to be fair Tenerife would have been just as nice.

trying really hard to feel sorry for your dilemma

Why don't you go to Cadiz? Spanish but far south, and meant to be lovely.

none of the tourist areas of the countries you mention are particularly unsafe, certainly not much more so than the UK.

sounds like this is a weather issue; you don't want it too hot and your husband wants no chance of rain. You can't get that in the same place at this time of year without major long-haul.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 30/09/2013 13:44

wouldn't be too hot!!!

specialsubject · 30/09/2013 13:45

oh, and if you book it and insure it now and then the FCO travel advice changes, your insurers should pay up. Do check first.

December in Turkey will not be beach weather, so I agree with you there if only for that reason.

sharm will probably be safe and probably won't be too hot and will definitely only have a few hours' sunshine a day (dark by 5.30 in November when we went)... but we discounted it for your reasons. yes it's a first world problem but hey, our holidays are hard earned and even if your insurer covers some / all of it if you have to cancel, and travel broadens the mind and all that, I don't want to get stuck in a warzone airport with a 3 year old ever.
Dubai and Oman seem to be doing very well out of people with our mindset...

Thanks for the comments everyone, although beast I wasn't asking for sympathy. I've already started looking at other places. This is our first holiday for years so I want to get it right.

Sharm is nice in November, not massively hot in the day but comfortable, nights are just right where you can wander in a t shirt and not be cold. From memory sunset was around 4pm, dark by 5.30.

Sharm seems to operate in its own little climate and I wouldn't let what is happening in the rest of Egypt deter you. It's very safe. We've been a there for a few years including last November whilst the troubles were going on in Cairo and there is no effect in that area at all.
