I do know that its not the job of the BBC schedulers to educate my child but seriously.. Jason & the Minotaur?!

WHY OH WHY (best points of view voice needed) can't they make a series of accurate retellings of Greek myths instead of this utter dross? The myths themselves would surely be entertaining enough to hold kids interest as well as being educational. As for grouping Pythagoras with Hercules and Jason, not to mention seemingly basing Hercules on the character of Cartman from South park.. why?!
The only redeeming scene of this entire thing was the Jason bloke not having a top on when he rocked up on the beach.

Your sincerely

I said this on the other thread, but I am holding out for some post modern self referential twisty REASON for all the mish mash myths.

It's just ridiculous otherwise.

PresidentServalan · 01/10/2013 06:59

YANBU I did the Greek myths at school and they were wonderful. I think they are brilliant for children as they are, they don't need to mess about like this.

macthecatsmum · 01/10/2013 07:05

Yay for us pedants! It was total and utter wankfuckery of the highest order. and it made me fuckin' mad-especially when i think some little twat of a writer actually came up with this shite-AND GOT PAID WITH MY LICENCE MONEY!

PresidentServalan · 01/10/2013 18:14

Why oh why employ some little fucknugget to rewrite what are possibly the most thrilling stories in history?? Angry

Sparklymommy · 01/10/2013 18:19

I loved Greek mythology at school. Why are they confusing kids and muddling the stories together? Totally unacceptable and unnecessary in my view!

fuzzpig · 01/10/2013 18:21

I don't watch telly really (have one but mainly use it for DVDs) but by the sound of it hell no YANBU

harticus · 01/10/2013 18:25

Oh dear. I enjoyed it. Blush
I know it isn't a proper evocation of the myths but so what? It is Saturday night peak time telly. At least it isn't some soap opera git in a spangly frock doing the fucking cha cha cha.

PeppiNephrine · 01/10/2013 18:44

Just don't bloody watch it. Stories aren't static, there is nothing wrong with playing around with them. It's not meant to be educational, its meant to entertain.
People who moan about this shit, turn the telly off and stop thinking yourself some kind of arbiter. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean large numbers of others don't.

SadBadMadFat · 01/10/2013 18:54

genuine question- did they mess around with Merlin?

I don't remember the Arthur and the round table stuff from childhood, so wouldnt know.

FactOfTheMatter · 01/10/2013 19:05

They messed around with Merlin beyond all recognition. But it's not often you hear Anglo-Saxon on telly, so I was happy enough :D

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 01/10/2013 19:09
Confused

What in god's name is an 'inaccurate' Greek myth when it's at home? Which of the ancient Greek versions do you think is 'accurate', and why?

They never happened.
They were made up millenia ago.
They exist in shitloads of different versions across millenia.

This sounds really shit as a programme but I have no clue how you could seriously 'mess around' with Merlin to the point of getting it wrong.

ScarerAndFuck · 01/10/2013 19:39

I really liked Tony Robinson doing the Odysseus stories when I was little.

He just walked about telling the story, and I think they showed some drawings as well.

My favourite bit was when he stole a plastic sword from a bucket outside a shop and ran off down the seafront with it, acting out the battle.

They ought to repeat that programme.

invicta · 01/10/2013 20:26

I quite enjoyed the programme.

itsn0tmeitsyou · 01/10/2013 20:31

YANBU. Not seen it but it sounds like horseshit.

Watched the first ten minutes of that ridiculous Atlantis 'programme' the other night. There's 10 minutes of my life I can't get back. I knew it was going to be shit when the guy was standing on the beach clutching his nads. Don't know why I gave it three further minutes.

itsn0tmeitsyou · 01/10/2013 20:32

Hang on I think we're talking about the same programme. I thought it was called Atlantis though????

itsn0tmeitsyou · 01/10/2013 20:34

btw LRDMagulisorryIcan'twriteyourname I love your point.

uselessinformation · 01/10/2013 20:35

Ds and I quite enjoyed it as a bit of light entertainment and we enjoyed discussing the myths. Ds knew more about the myths than me. Unfortunately some people won't have any background knowledge so will think these are the myths. Merlin was very historically inaccurate.

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 01/10/2013 20:40

'Merlin was very historically inaccurate.'

No shit.

PeppiNephrine · 01/10/2013 20:43

Lol @ Merlin being historically inaccurate. What the fuck else could it be?

freddiefrog · 01/10/2013 20:48

Are you talking about Atlantis?

I thought it was utter tosh. DH was watching it and I only caught bits of it, and ended up wondering what the dickens was going on.

I was going to watch it from the beginning but from the sounds of it I'll give it a miss

freddiefrog · 01/10/2013 20:49

Well, the bits I saw of it was utter tosh

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 01/10/2013 20:50

Well, I enjoyed it. Written by the same people who wrote 'Merlin' so I was expecting a bit of jiggery pokery. I loved the fact that they had Pythagoras in it! My nerdy, maths loving DSs were delighted. They are only stories, after all, not a history lesson.

SadBadMadFat · 01/10/2013 21:11

I knew it was going to be shit when the guy was standing on the beach clutching his nads. Don't know why I gave it three further minutes.

Grin Grin Grin.

dont know why they had to have him naked in the first place, and 2- if its a family prog why was it on so late?

uselessinformation · 01/10/2013 21:49

ha ha those that are laughing at me for saying Merlin was historically inaccurate -I fell right into that one didn't I ! Still loved it but I do think it could have been set in the dark ages rather than mediaeval times and they could have pretended the mail was a bit heavier than they did! I know what you mean though!

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 01/10/2013 21:52

Sorry. Blush

You are very gracious and I am a nasty, nasty person.

It was just a funny turn of phrase.

It does look tinselly as fuck, that mail, I do agree. And they're always suspiciously clean ...
