(D)H shrank my dress - to say that I'm pissed off

is an understatement Angry grrr. Angry Sad

Two weeks ago I bought a very nice dress from Phase Eight. It was the first non-maternity item of clothing I have bought since I had dc2 10 months ago. I have lost a bit of weight recently and I bought this as a treat so that I wouldn't have to wear my maternity dresses any longer.

He banged it in the washing machine together with the kids' jeans etc and now the dress is ruined.

I have thrown a might strop over this ( I know that is bu) and he has apologised but he doesn't seem to think he did anything wrong. I am mainly pissed of that (a) now I don't have a nice dress any longer and have to wear my boring maternity dresses and (b) that he didn't hesitate to think before putting a dress in with the DC's clothes. I mean wtf? Anyway, rant over.

Are you sure it's ruined ? Often things look ruined but iron up ok. Most of things that say dry clean will wash no problem.

Meerkatwhiskers · 29/09/2013 11:29

My DH doesn't know how to use the washing machine. I feel this is a good thing. He has recently learnt how to do the tumble dryer though. He does know to separate lights and darks too as we have separate laundry baskets for them.

I wear quite a lot of white so have a white wash a couple of times a week. My student nurse uniforms are white too so daren't wash them with anything else and have managed to keep them still bright white for 2 years so far.

My stepdad is always ruining my mums clothes by washing them inappropriately. It does her head in. But he is disabled and home all day while she works full time so she is grateful that he 'helps' lol.

He went to town to replace the dress but the shops weren't open yet Smile so he can e back with a bunch of flowers Smile

Yes, I do shrink things every now and then and I have to say that I get just as furious with myself Blush.

There is just something about ruining nice /favourite clothes in the washing that gets my goat...

Dp did this a few times at uni. I unashamedly went apeshit each time (very poor student, ruined dress means no dress) - in increasing ferocity each time (once is a learning experience, twice is stupid, three times is just plain lazy). he now knows what the symbols on washing mean and knows how to sort it. he tried to pull the 'well I wont wash your stuff then' shit but no, I don't think that is acceptable. check the labels. Angry Hes not ruined anything since.

glad he went to try and fix it. is it length shrunk? some of my ruined ones do duty as a top even now Wink

heidihole · 29/09/2013 11:52

awww he's lovely OP. It was only an accident, and I'd have been livid too but glad you're all calm now and glad he tried to put it right.

liquidstate · 29/09/2013 12:12

Aww. I think you need to forgive him since he has been so sweet. Smile

What dress was it? Is there any way to get hold of another one cheaper (ebay, 15% off discount days etc?).

Laleloola · 29/09/2013 12:30

Thank you for letting me rant Grin

Yes, dress has shrunk; it's quite short and rather tight now. Maybe for when I have she'd some more pounds?

It might be our bloody washing machine actually. I have ruined a couple of Jersey dresses from Next. They shrunk although I washed them at 40 degrees on a 'sensitive' wash Hmm - oh I loved those two dresses and they were brand new Sad. Last year when I was pregnant I had treated myself to one really nice maternity dress from jojo maman. My mum came over to help out, washed it and... it shrunk Shock

To dh's credit (and my strop shame) he has now ordered the same dress in another colour from the online shop.

All is well in the Laleloola household again. Smile

I washed a next t shirt according to the instructions and it shrunk literally 6 inches . I would have taken those dresses back ! Try putting the dress in a bucket of fabric softener for a while . While it's wet , get it out and squeeze tet water out. Put it on te line wet and pull it to shape . You may be surprised how much you an get material to relax . The weight of the water will put it down as it dries . Today is a great day to do this .

Mermaid, I returned the first one. They gave me my money back but made a big hooha about it. Then I bought a similar one again a few months later and it shrunk too. I never got around returning that one.

I can commiserate. My DH has ruined quite a few things of mine in the wash.
My advice is not to put any hand wash items in the laundry box with everything else. Safer that way.

fossil971 · 29/09/2013 13:14

YABU to be p'd off but it is just one of those things. Glad you managed to find another one like it.

I've had this happen. DH thought my champagne-coloured Coast dress could go in with the lights and whites - it was beyond recovery.

It was a dry clean only dress so I don't know what possessed me to even drop it in the wash basket except for staggering back very late and tired from a wedding. We can't afford to replace it but it was only for special occasions and we don't have many of those.

I didn't feel I could complain because he does nearly all the washing. But I now have a separate basket for anything fragile/special.

Colours do run - we have red school uniform and this year's new sweatshirts have discoloured a couple of white things that crept into the Red Wash.
