To wonder if this is a scam? Strange phone call just now.

I just had a random phonecall from a mobile number (number displayed as normal, but I do not recognise it). The caller sounded female and Scottish, and when I said "Hello?", (I don't give my name and number when I answer a call, I just say hello) they asked who was there on the end of the line??!?

I told them they had called me, and they then said sorry they must have the wrong number. I said that yes, they must do, never mind, and they hung up.

What do you suppose - just very odd wrong number or scammer?

Wrong number, I think.

TabithaCampbellBlack · 28/09/2013 15:33

Perfectly ordinary wrong number! She was probably expecting someone else to answer and said "Oh, who's that?" in surprise. Have done the same myself.

Goodadvice1980 · 28/09/2013 15:34

If you're worried google the number.

gamerchick · 28/09/2013 15:34

Wrong number.. I get a bit taken aback if I ring the wrong number where only one person could answer and it's a completely different voice to what I was expecting.

ouryve · 28/09/2013 15:35

Just a plain, ordinary wrong number and probably very surprised to hear an unexpected voice.

Arethereanynamesfree · 28/09/2013 15:37

I thought wrong number, and then wondered why they wouldn't have just asked for whoever they thought they had rang, iyswim? Completely random - I suppose whoever it was is probably wondering who they called and was just not sure what to say to an unexpected voice.

It doesn't sound odd at all. In what possible way could it be a scam?

Trills · 28/09/2013 15:38

Probably just a wrong number.

Groovee · 28/09/2013 15:38

Are you Scottish OP maybe as soon as they heard the accent they knew it was a wrong number.

Rachel778 · 28/09/2013 15:39

Bit paranoid or what .

meditrina · 28/09/2013 15:40

You can google the number to see if it's associated with a known scam.

But it sounds more like an ordinary wrong number.

Unless of course you have a guilty secret, in which case discovery is possibly imminent.

Arethereanynamesfree · 28/09/2013 15:43

Not worried, it just seemed to be an odd way of phrasing it. She literally said, "Hello may I ask who it is on the other end of the line please?" I was a bit bemused, so just replied that they had called me, etc.

Hope no one in Scotland is now wondering who the strange person they rang was!

Possibly a call centre. Our system brings up details for outbound. Nothing for inbound. I've made a call where the details didn't come up and wrongly assumed inbound. I felt like a tit and apologised profusely.

Arethereanynamesfree · 28/09/2013 15:50

Lol, no guilty secrets here! And not paranoid either, just have never had a wrong number like that before - usually whoever calls will say hello can I speak to etc? Just thought it was funny the way it went. As mentioned, they probably realised when I said hello as no, I am not Scottish.

Can you tell it's a very quiet sort of Saturday here?

OP posts:
Arethereanynamesfree · 28/09/2013 15:54

Ah, I know what bothered me! It was because the conversation felt like it was in reverse of how it should be, I suppose I was expecting to ask who was there myself and then she did instead, which isn't usually how a phone call from a stranger goes!

As I said, very quiet Saturday. Can't even discuss socks as they are all where they should be for once...

I once called my parents and a strange voice answered. It wasn't my mum or dad or my sister so I was a bit taken aback and asked 'who's this?'
They replied saying they were Julie, which was a surprise as my name is Julie (Names have been changed to protect the innocent)
I was so confused I just hung up.
Turns out ds had a friend staying and everyone else was out.
It did throw me though.
Maybe it was a wrong number op, and the caller was just really thrown.

Arethereanynamesfree · 28/09/2013 16:07

Somewhere in Scotland, someone else is probably starting their own thread about the person who wouldn't give their name on the phone Blush

Sorry anonymous caller, whoever you are!

Could it be one those weird ones whereby both phones ring? DH has had this at work and his phone rang and so did the phone the other end. Weird crossed lines thing.
