Walking on walls - AIBU?

MakeHayIsAWhaleNow · 27/09/2013 22:01

Do you let your children walk on walls? I do sometimes (depending on the wall) but always kind of feel like I shouldn't - but they love doing it. AIBU? Do you object to children walking on the wall outside your house? My children are only 4 and 2....

I wouldn't object

Walk away :)

Hassled · 27/09/2013 22:04

Yes, I object to anyone walking on my wall. It's my wall. It's only held together by cement.

MoonlightandRoses · 27/09/2013 22:06

Oh, those types of walls - I thought you meant the indoor type room divider thingies. Blush

Catmint · 27/09/2013 22:08

Public walls are ok. Private walls notsomuch.

LauraChant · 27/09/2013 22:09

I probably would mind a bit. I never let the kids walk on people's/ garden walls but I do let them walk on "public" walls. The teachers at DS1's school said it helps their balance which helps their brains develip!

GladbagsGold · 27/09/2013 22:09

I let them when they were small, IMO a toddler walkinng along a wall won't do much damage but once they are school age they are too big.

LauraChant · 27/09/2013 22:09

develop

PollyPlummer · 27/09/2013 22:09

No, I wouldn't mind. It would make me smile to see children walking on my wall.

I wouldn't let my dcdo it though because I know it would piss people off.

PollyPlummer · 27/09/2013 22:10

I let them walk on public walls.

EverybodysStressyEyed · 27/09/2013 22:14

I don't mind kids walking on it - i do mind people sitting on it though!

My wall is the top of the coal vault really so it is deeper than your average wall and lower. We had a family of 4 using it for seating while the younger kids scooted up and down the pavement and my front path. It was quite obtrusive because my living room window is only 2m away. Luckily I have a 6 year old who likes to sit in the window and stare. After a few days they stopped and haven't been seen since!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 27/09/2013 22:17

I don't mind, if you are looking after your child.

I did object to the man who let his DD (who looked about two)walk along the edge of the infinity pool on holiday, as there was a 30ft drop on the other side and she did not look steady on her feet.

binger · 27/09/2013 22:26

Really pisses me off actually. Quite a few near us have/are falling down because they are old and often get walked on (school route). I once told an adult to get off it. Won't be cheap to repair.

plantsitter · 27/09/2013 22:27

I don't mind personally. I normally let my toddler do it in the middle of the day if there's noone around, but neither her nor reception age daughter are allowed to do it on the way from school becasue that would mean everyone else would, and that would be annoying.

I secretly think people are a bit grumpy if they do mind!

Lora1982 · 27/09/2013 22:30

I used to love doing that and when he's older I'll no doubt let my baby too. Not on other people's though!

GreenShadow · 27/09/2013 22:36

Wouldn't mind children walking on our walls (if I had them).

Would make me smile remembering doing it myself when I was young and lived on an estate where everyone had low front garden walls.

Finola1step · 27/09/2013 22:38

I don't let mine walk in other people's garden walls. Public walls are ok. Our low front garden wall has just been knocked down. Or should I say kicked over. We noticed that it was quite wobbly. DH gave it a bit if a kick and the wall fell into the flower bed. I'm really glad that it wasn't one of the local little ones on the way to school sitting or walking on the wall that made it go.

Donkeyok · 27/09/2013 22:40

it depends if they were twitching the curtains. Some larger walls are safe with a hand held and great fun jumping off. If they embarrass you, you could pretend not to notice.

jamdonut · 27/09/2013 22:42

Grumpy person here. You shouldn't allow children to walk on people's private walls, nor their gardens. I always told my children not to do it because they belong to someone.

A couple of days ago, my eldest son (21) came in saying he had just said to a woman outside our house, "Thanks for letting her (her child) walk all over our front garden" to which she replied " She's a f*ing child, you moron!" Hmm

numbum · 27/09/2013 22:45

I always let my 6 year old walk on walls. I didnt realise it was bad manners! I always did it and now she always does it. They're the same walls I walked on 30 years ago so must be made of sturdier stuff than some posters walls

I dont mind children on my walls scooter tricks included

LeoTheLateBloomer · 27/09/2013 22:46

I allow DD to walk on public ones but never private.

My garden wall is too high for walking on but I did move the fence from the inside edge of the wall to the outside to prevent local teenagers sitting on it in the evening. I hated that.

dancingwithmyselfandthecat · 27/09/2013 22:52

Not acceptable on private walls. A random selection of people on the internet may not mind, some individuals you know may not mind, but if you don't know the owner you shouldn't assume. It is their property and they are responsible for the upkeep.

justmyview · 27/09/2013 22:56

I think it's ignorant to let your children walk on other people's walls. It's private property. Unless you know they don't mind, you shouldn't assume it's OK

NoComet · 27/09/2013 23:04

I walk on walls, (well I did when my knees would let me jump off). It worried my exBF, where as DH just used to hold my hand and kiss me as I jumped off.

DD1 was a great walker on walls too. DD2 didn't used too, but now turns them into gym beams.

I agree that it must be strong public walls, not peoples garden walls.

Sunnysummer · 27/09/2013 23:05

Am so sleep deprived that I temporarily imagined children doing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style moves on internal walls, parallel to the ground, and was impressed.Blush

For exterior walls, I'd agree not to do it on other people's, and not in parks etc unless it looks enormously sturdy.

Thatsnotmychicken · 27/09/2013 23:08

Me too Sunny, I thought I was missing something! My first thought was I didn't want shoe prints on my paintwork!!! Smile
