Hind waters breaking, not proper waters?

Ok, not really an AIBU but I am umming and arrhhing so need advice from people who might know what I'm talking about!

First of all, I'm 39+4 with my first. On Tuesday morning I woke up with some unusual wetness in my pants, but not huge amounts. I put a pad in and left it at that. That evening, DP and I bumped uglies and after there was quite a lot of clear liquid on the bed. I'm fairly sure I didn't wee myself.

We rang the hospital and they said to go in, especially as I have strep B and need antibiotics when I go into labour. We waited around (as happens) and eventually saw an obstetrician at 2am. She was on the verge of inducing me when I asked her to actually check my waters had gone, as it hadn't been as much liquid as I'd expected. She did an internal exam and said my waters were intact, and that is was probably my hind waters. I was then discharged.

Since then, I've not had any more leaking and no contractions. Baby is moving normally. Google and MN has told me that hind waters can break weeks before main waters, and can reseal.

My concern is the risk of infection- seeing as I know I have strep B, should I try and push no pun intended for an induction, even if I haven't lost my main waters or started contractions?

Has anyone here had any experience of hind waters? Every other anecdotal story I've read has said that either labour started naturally, or else they were induced. I've been told it could still be a week.

Thanks. And sorry for posting in AIBU. I guess IABU.

There was a slight gap between delivery and drop off, honestly!

DropYourSword · 27/09/2013 04:34

Yeah, give em a couple of weeks to get orientated to the world!

With DD1 my waters broke - a few days of slight leaking (which I thought was wee Blush but later realised was leaking waters) followed by a single big gush that then stopped completely. I went in to be examined and was told categorically that my waters had not broken and sent home. My contractions started soon after that and when I returned to hospital I ended up with a consultant putting a clip on DD1's head and he then confirmed that I was right and my waters had actually gone Hmm.

So just because the hospital tell you they haven't gone, doesn't mean they're right. If you're even 0.00001% concerned, go back.

They were a bit sceptical with me TBH, but I KNEW (it being my third baby) what waters breaking felt like, and I was proven right when he was born with 'ragged membranes' - ie a hole at the bottom where they eventually broke the forewaters, and a hole at the top where the hindwaters were leaking.

(in my case)

My hind waters went at 35+1 dec 2013 - I thought at first it was a bit of wee but then came the 'show' the following day - although not bloody. Spoke with delivery suite on the Saturday night as leggings quite wet after day out and I was becoming a little concerned. They advised I do 'pad test' to see how wet it got after an hour - didn't phone back as tired/ didn't know how to quantify wetness.. In the end went in Sunday evening - they weren't concerned - didn't think anything was happening, baby seemed quite happy. They had a look with speculum but inconclusive so used a stick test (similar to a pregnancy test) which showed my waters HAD gone. (These turned out to be my hind ones - hence the lack of gush). I was admitted to the ward and told I wouldn't be leaving before my baby arrived. As similar posts they had to weigh up risks of inducing early with risk of infection as no barrier between baby and outside world now. I was put on antibiotics straight away and temperature monitored every 3 hours along with baby's heart beat - everything was fine. They decided they would induce me that Tuesday as I would be 36 weeks and apparently this is a magic number in the inducing world - they like to wait until this date before starting anything. Long story short - baby was born shortly after midnight weighing a good 6lb 3. This seems like a fairly common occurrence - another girl on the ward had the same experience as me and was induced when she reached her 36 weeks as well (had a slightly longer wait). I'm glad I persisted with the delivery suite for me to come down as we could've become quite unwell by the sounds of it.

My hind waters started leaking 5 days before DC2 was born. Labour started naturally in the end.

NotQuiteWithItAtAll · 20/01/2014 20:14

My hind waters broke, which the midwives thought was my main water's, it wasn't until i started to push my waters went. Happened the same day though.

QueenofLouisiana · 20/01/2014 20:26

I as given 48 between my hind waters oing and having to return or an induction. DS thought otherwise and I went into spontaneous labour a few hours before I was due to go in. I was told no baths or sex due to risk of infection- was pissed off about the baths, DH was relieved about the sex as I was the size of a house by the Grin
We had to o regular temp checks at home over the 2 days after my waters went. the mw visted twice a day (flt bad about that as it was a bank holiday weekend!) DS and I were kept under observation for 2days in hospital to check their was no strep b.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 20/01/2014 20:31

What are the hind waters? ( genuine question) I thought there was only 1 lot of waters.

I had a small leak didn't think nothing of it and carried on as normal then 24 hours later massive leak but didn't go into labour was induced within hour 12 hours and had an antibiotic I've drip, Still not sure why

Bodicea · 20/01/2014 21:04

My hind waters went and 5 days later my proper waters broke and I went straight into labour. So get ready :-)

MrsPatrickDempsey · 20/01/2014 21:12

Fortydoors

There is only one bag of waters - the term hind waters is a bit misleading. There tend to be pockets of amniotic fluid which may pool depending on the baby's position and then leak. The 'main waters' remain if the baby is fitting well in the pelvis.

I don't think I have described this very well .....

Not to be too TMI but could your dp have left his "mark" on the sheet?!
My poor dsil thought her waters had gone as she had had a gush but it turned out it was from the dtd the night before. She was a little embarrassed to say the least.
My waters went with a slow leak with my dd1. I was induced after 5 days and all was fine. Good luck,
