to have used an expired pregnancy test and now be unsure whether to trust the result?

Have been TTC our second child for just a couple of weeks, and as I had an old pregnancy test in the cupboard I thought I'd see what happened if I used it rather than just throw it away... Well, it said I'm pregnant by 1-2 weeks (it's one of those Clear Blue digital dating ones). Grin

I'm really trying not to get too excited though as:

  1. the test had an expiry date of August 2012;

  2. I've tested too early (I'm about 5 days away from the date my period is due, and I know even the earliest tests say to use them no more than 4 days ahead); and

  3. I've tested at night (aren't HCG levels supposed to be higher in the morning?).

So I know I was a bit stupid to do the test knowing that the result would be unreliable... And now I'm struggling to stop myself getting my hopes up. Especially as with DD1 it happened straight away so maybe it could be the same this time...

I know I just have to wait until next week and then do an another, in date, test. But surely an expired test would be more likely to give a false negative than a false positive...?

I tested 6 days early with one of those tests and got 1-2 weeks... It was twins Grin

When I tested a couple of days later it had changed to 3-4 weeks so I suppose that was a clue rage levels were rising quickly.

DigestivesAndPhiladelphia · 25/09/2013 08:15

That was meant to say "a clue THAT levels were rising quickly" Confused

gordyslovesheep · 25/09/2013 08:19

Did your rage levels rise quickly though with all those hormones!

Fingers crossed op x

retest please. people are wwaiting. pots are not getting washed, cleaning is not getting done...

Lweji · 25/09/2013 11:04

Do retest.

The test is a year past his expiry date and could give false positives.

I bought a bunch of cheap expired Clearblue digitals on eBay a while ago, intending to use them to "date" any pregnancy week by week if I got my BFP.

I got my BFP at 9dpo, by the "textbooks" that would be 5 days before my period is due. The expired Clearblue came up positive that evening, just like yours. You could barely see the line on the First Response at the time! I'm now nearly 14 weeks.

From past experience expiry dates just make negatives more likely, not positives.

But.. test again to confirm of course.. but if I had to bet £100 I'd say you were pregnant! Grin

CrispyFB · 25/09/2013 11:17

Forgot to add - the tests were two years out of date!

SoupDragon · 25/09/2013 11:22

Just a word of caution and not place marking at all I imagine the digital ones perhaps have the capacity to go wrong in the digital part of the test stick and give the wrong result in a way that the spot-the-line tests don't.

But clearly you need to POAS again regardless!

AuntPittypat · 25/09/2013 18:45

Well.... I tested again at lunchtime today with a brand spanking new test and.... It said exactly the same! So it looks like all you wise people were right, I am officially upduffed! Grin

Now begins the paranoid wait until first scan to check all is ok. And to check if it's one mini Pitty or two. This talk of twins is scaring me!

So happy! Grin Grin
