to find supermarkets oddly comforting places?

OK, am being slightly unreasonable as I don't have to go that often (shop online and/or DH goes to one near his work). But I find them weirdly comforting, I like nosing at other families shopping together and I like the rows and rows of nicely organised food.....IABU aren't I? (Morrisons or Sainburies in case anyone wants to know!)

YANBU, I think it's all the food and all the people. And the bright lights, sainsburys is best because it has a sort of orange glow and my old local one had low ceilings so was all cosy.

pianodoodle · 24/09/2013 12:05

Sorry can't agree here - they are souless hell holes that drain the very life out of you from the second you step through the door Grin

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:06

Yay, I am not alone! Yes the bright orange lights are part of it...they feel so safe.

Asdas do not feel the same because everything is lime green - doesn't have that cosy edge!

No, the cold air and fluorescent lights and the old people blocking the aisles and the screaming babies stress me out.

I should stop going on Saturday afternoons.

StuntGirl · 24/09/2013 12:06

I bloody love the fortnightly shop, as long as I have the time to do it at my leisure and I'm not all harried and rushing about!

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:06

Oh Grin

They are anonymous, quite predictable and full of little possibilities, if they aren't too busy and you are in the right mood.

sonlypuppyfat · 24/09/2013 12:08

I love a nice supermarket al the possibilitys!

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:09

All very true SmallClanger. Maybe I'd do well living in a 1984/Brave New World type scenario.

I think they are comforting too.

I'm aware that's because I step in one every month or so as I get the vast majority delivered.

When I go its just to mooch about with no stress - if I actually had to seriously shop I'd hate it. It's about 8 years since I did the weekly shop (and I really hated it and felt very resentful)

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:11

Laurie yes same here, I'm sure if I had to do it weekly I'd get annoyed. Though I did used to live opposite a Sainsburies (beautiful view! Hmm) so popped in several times a week - not stressful though cos if we forgot anything we could just run back.

I love just wandering down the aisles seeing what's on offer, what new things are available to buy. And the seasonal aisles! Oh! Our local one has a small Christmas section already. Although where the Halloween one is I don't know Hmm

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:15

There's nothing like MN for making you feel like you're not crazy Grin

TeWiSavesTheDay · 24/09/2013 12:16

I like going at 8am on a Saturday, everything is fully stocked but no one is there - very peaceful!

Damnautocorrect · 24/09/2013 12:18

Sainsburys yes, smells all bready and reminds me of being little.
Tescos no

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:21

Agree Damn Tescos always feels untidy and confusing, although it's the supermarket of my childhood so you'd think I'd find it extra comforting. Prob depends on your local branch.

CostaLady · 24/09/2013 12:22

I'm glad it's not just me! ASDA - hellhole, Morrisons - lovely and comforting.

sophiedaal · 24/09/2013 12:24

YANBU. I only have to step into Waitrose to feel a sense of calm descend on me. It's the aisles. And the coffee shop. And the quiet colours on the labels.

I thought I was really odd! I feel weirdly safe and reassured when I go down the travelator thing into our local Tesco. Do you think they pump some sort of tranquiliser / happy gas into the store? HmmGrin

marthastew · 24/09/2013 12:27

Someone told me the other day that when they are feeling stressed out they always go for a walk round the big Waitrose in West Ealing.

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 12:29

Hmm martha, I think supermarket for mild cases of anxiety, but John Lewis for genuine stress.

ShirazSavedMySanity · 24/09/2013 12:30

YABU.

The weekily shop with DD (5) and DS (2) in tow is the most stressful thing I do.

BeetleBugBaby · 24/09/2013 12:32

Never have to worry if you get locked in, you wouldn't go hungry (but would probably be in a bit of bother once you were freed)

MrsGeologist · 24/09/2013 12:34

YANBU, food is often the only treat I will allow myself, so food shopping is also hunting for lovely treats, even if it's just a new cheese or some naice ham.
