To disagree with 3/4 year old children having more childcare paid for

I feel the goverment should pay for education rather than childcare. 15 hours a week is enough to meet a child's educational needs for pre school. At a time of austerity, I feel there are bigger spending priorities. (Providing enough school places for children who are of complusory school age!)

If you choose to have chidlren then you should pay to look after them. I feel that labour's set of proposals are totally unaffordable and making the "banks" pay will damage the UK financial sector long term.

All these election bribes do not help the UK in the long term.

Retro how can you say a dual income family on 60k is very wealthy when a single income of 50k is not ? In the SE there is no way you would get change from 10k after train fares and childcare for 1 dc.

AnnieLobeseder · 24/09/2013 18:52

Wow Retropear, you need to reign in a bit, you're being really rude now. So couples who conceive naturally don't love their children as much as parent who need fertility treatment? WTAF? Shock

jasminerose · 24/09/2013 18:53

Retro - You are well enough to be with your child, and you are doing that

TotemPole · 24/09/2013 18:53

BadlyWrittenPoem, Everyone's circumstances are different.

Water rates vary on the size of the property and between different providers.

Travel expenses can vary because of things like where you live in relation to work & school and what's available in your borough. E.g. in London, children from 11+ get free bus travel. For someone else it might cost £10 a week for a child to get to school. So a working family with 2 children, they could have school meals(£20) plus travel (£20) to pay for.

It all adds up.

jasminerose · 24/09/2013 18:54

*off

TotemPole · 24/09/2013 19:00

off to you too jasmine :p

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:01

You're putting words into my mouth Annie I have a NC child too thanks.Hmm

If you break down monthly left overs for a family on 60k single to 60k joint I suspect the joint after double tax threshold, lower tax rate,2 year old hours and the help coming from the gov would be better off. They are not needy.

jasminerose · 24/09/2013 19:02

Sorry was word I missed off last post!

TotemPole · 24/09/2013 19:02

I know, I was just joking.:)

Wishihadabs · 24/09/2013 19:09

What are you talking about ? 2 year olds whose parents are both employed dontget free funding. Nursery for under 3s is approx 60-80 per day. So very nearly £1000/ pcm for one child ! I am sorry for anyone who struggles to conceive, but I fail to see the relevance.

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:12

I didn't bring it up.

2468Motorway · 24/09/2013 19:15

Retropear
You are getting all your initiatives mixed up. The 2 yr old help is in cases of serious hardship, either financial or because of a parent or child with disabilities/health needs. It is not open to all and its not childcare, its more like enrichment.

This is only a proposal. Likely it will never see the light of day.

BTW even in some scandi countries the great subsidised childcare has limited hours for those not working. Like the government here they want to encourage/incentivise working because they see it as a long term benefit for GDP etc.

AnnieLobeseder · 24/09/2013 19:18

No, I don't think I am putting words in your mouth, Retropear, your post was very clear.

However, any "biological need" you may feel to be home with your children is absolutely irrelevant to this thread.

I also suspect your assumption of the single vs double family on dual income calculation is incorrect. In our case, while dual income is £60k, we were losing money with two in nursery so I had to stay home. We live in the South East and needed every penny to pay the bills. If one of us had been earning £60k alone while the other was at home, we'd have been laughing.

I wouldn't count us as "needy" either, but it still makes financial sense for the family and for the state for us both to be in work if we both want to. It's not charity or a handout for middle-class families, it's in the financial best interests of the whole country to support people in their choice to work. The government wouldn't do it otherwise because they're all basically heartless bastards.

Why do you struggle to grasp that?

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:25

Sorry but a family on dual of £80k get 5k a month with 2x nursery fees of 1k each(not all families have anything like that to pay) and mortgage of say 1k on top that leaves a very healthy 2k to live off per month so are hardly deperately needing the help the Tories are bringing in let alone even yet more from labour.

As I said those waaaay down the chain I get but those on 60 and above I don't.

Eliza22 · 24/09/2013 19:26

Why don't employers play fair by paying a decent wage, ending nil hours contracts and trying (where possible) to accommodate child friendly hours? That way, we could afford our own pre-school and not have to work several jobs for less than/just about minimum wage. No wonder care workers (largely female) are going on a 10 day strike .... How many people take a cut in wage when hours and terms stay unchanged.

Vakant · 24/09/2013 19:28

Haven't read the whole thread, got bored when it became a SAHM vs WOHM bun fight.

This is a sticking plaster policy. What the government needs to focus on is bringing down the cost of living and bringing up minimum wage levels. No need for free child care then. Those who wish to stay at home with their children can do so comfortably on one wage without whining about hard done by they are. Those who want to work can do so and afford childcare comfortably without whining about hard done by they are.

Wishihadabs · 24/09/2013 19:28

So retropear your DH earns 60 which is 3300 after tax. Same mortgage of 1k leaves 2300.

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:31

We don't get CB though.Wink

Hunfriend · 24/09/2013 19:32

"waaaay down the chain" Hmm

What a disgusting thing to say - did you mean those on a lower income than you Hmm

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:34

Think we can do without the drama.Hmm

ElizabetaLuknichnaTomanovskaya · 24/09/2013 19:38

ooh Wishihadabs £300 going spare, can I have it Grin

Eliza22 and Vakant I agree with both of you. Before that bloody witch flew in 1979 that is exactly the situation we had. She let loose the equivalent of an economic Atom bomb called neo-liberalism, which has seen falling wages in real terms and higher corporate profits. We know where the money is to create a fair society but no bloody politician will go after it.

Hunfriend · 24/09/2013 19:43

Drama?

Drama would be if my DC ever uttered words like that about someone less well off than them Retro
Well done- you have showed your true colours on this thread.

Hunfriend · 24/09/2013 19:43

shown

Retropear · 24/09/2013 19:45

Whatever hun,you know nothing about me or my colours thanks.I know what I meant.
