To think this is the most offensive band name

In the pub I bumped into some people I knew from school days and haven't seen in 15+ years one was telling me he'd set up his own record label, which I though was great, then he took off his hoodie and reviled the latest band merchandise. The band was called "cot death" WTAF!! I must have looked shocked/appalled and I said I didn't think it was an appropriate name, after a quick exchange of cross words in which he said he thought I "used to be cool" we parted company and avoided each other for the rest if the night. Is this offensive?

... it's one of the great things about being over 30, IMO

StuntGirl · 22/09/2013 20:19

It's ok not to like the name, it doesn't make you cool/not cool or whatever. He's a bit silly to get offended at you being offended when that was the desired outcome...

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/09/2013 20:21

I dont think its cool to say cool any more Wink

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/09/2013 20:22

For some reason, the names don't bother me. It's all part of the... fun. The extreme metal stuff has a sort of purposely OTT sense of humour. Sort of "What is the most offensive thing imaginable? Hee! " And the people in that scene are the nicest people you could imagine. The event staff at Bloodstock festival (Dying Fetus headlined this year) all said that it's their favourite festival to work because everyone is so polite and friendly.

Nora2012 · 22/09/2013 20:22

Jamie, I doubt I ever was cool to be fair, but you're right I don't need to feel bad about it post 30. My cool level isn't helped by me now singing "Jamie, Jamie, Jamie an his magic torch"

not surprised he set up his own label as I can't imagine any established label would touch a band with that name. What a twat.

swampytiggaa · 22/09/2013 20:29

What's wrong with cradle of filth? Btw the guitarist from there runs our local music shop....

Nora2012 · 22/09/2013 20:30

Katy I don't doubt that they are nice people who listen to this music, don't want to stereotype about people's music choice. But it just seems an offensive band name and his surprise at my offence was strange. Just seems unduly insensitive.

I thought it might be Anal Cunt too. But no, this is far more offensive.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 22/09/2013 20:36

Blush I don't understand the Cradle of Filth reference either. Mind, I was more a Bluetones/Shed Seven sort of girl. Grin

heidihole · 22/09/2013 20:36

Wow. I was not expecting that. Came on the thread thinking it'd be "Billy and the Cunts" or something and was going to say 'each to their own'

But wow. I'm not usually offended and I'd be slack jawed at that!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/09/2013 20:41

MrsOakensheild, there are several established labels that sign bands with offensive names.

satsumagirl · 22/09/2013 20:46

Who the feck names their band that? It's awful. Anyway, I suspect they will have to change their name sharpish should they become successful. Twats.

kali110 · 22/09/2013 20:49

Why is cradle of filth bad?swampy where is your music shop? I may have to take a trip!

cocolepew · 22/09/2013 20:52

What a Twat. I used to go to our local college for a night class and they had a poster up for a band called
The Kiddie Fiddlers Hmm I tore it down then went and complained.

swampytiggaa · 22/09/2013 20:53

North devon Kali. I was surprised when my friend told me - have chatted to him whilst buying guitar strings etc. It was suggested i approached him for lessons for ds.

Nora2012 · 22/09/2013 20:57

Is kiddie fiddlers a band of children violinists and this is a horrid mistake?

PinkFairyArmadillo · 22/09/2013 21:05

swampytiggaa Current guitarist or ex? I still lust after one of them like a horny teenager Blush

swampytiggaa · 22/09/2013 21:09

Not sure pinkfairy. Although i like metal cradle of filth never really popped onto my radar. Will ask my informant when i see her at the school gates :)

SignoraStronza · 22/09/2013 23:06

YABU. There are some far more offensive/equally offensive band names than/as that. DH is just giving me the lowdown...

Dying Fetus
Aborted
Anal Cunt
Sodom
Vomitory
Alabama Thunderpussy
Children of Bodom (Not Boden, MNrsWink )
Rotting Christ
Decapitated
Canival Corpse's tracks "Entrails ripped from a virgin's cunt" and "Stripped, raped and strangled".

I could go on and on and on. Schlock horror!

Strangly enough (as someone mentioned upthread), metal festivals, such as Bloodstock, Wacken and Damnation, are some of the safest and most chilled out festivals around. The bands might seem scary, but are usually quite lovely (and often extremely geeky) and everyone really does look out for each other. The blokes are some of the least misogynistic men I know and metalheads make awesome husbands, partners and fathers.

I might think it all sounds rather grim (and the aim is to shock) but is usually nigh on impossible to understand the grunting lyrics anyway.

SignoraStronza · 22/09/2013 23:07

...apart from Cradle of Filth, who are a bunch of twats well, Danny anyway.

lottiegarbanzo · 22/09/2013 23:18

None of those gory names bother me, they suggest adults referencing horror films featuring other adults messing about. That's quite different from the cold, matter of fact reference to such a sad, quiet tragedy. There's no pantomime 'horror' there, just sadness.

DanglingChillis · 22/09/2013 23:33

Liking the idea of a metal band called Children of Boden. Singles include 'Death by Applique' and ''Hotchpotch Horror'.
