To wonder why I'm no good with fragrances?

I'm not a glade plugin type of girl - at least their adverts manage to repel me, but when I am in the artificial stinks isle in wilkinson, I am somehow fascinated. Could my house smell of lovely sophistication?
I brought some 'clean linen' stinky bamboo sticks from aldi recently and put them in the bedroom having given it a bit of a blitz. I hid them a bit, imagining Dh finding the room unusually clean and inviting, but instead he said "it smells weird over here" . The stink just lingers in the corner smelling too strong, and that's it.

I have occasionally been to people's houses that smell gorgeous, Though I can't think who, or I would ask.

I find the same with body fragrance, sometimes you walk past someone and they smell amazing, not of perfume, just of loveliness , what is their secret?

Sometimes dh days I smell lovely but it is just my dry shampoo...

Sorry to disappoint, just meant a burner but not lit - ie essential oil in a little water but without lighting the candle under it - you still get a nice smell in a smaller room without worrying about small people getting burnt fingers!

I open the windows daily and have the bedroom window open at night too, I have an electric tart warmer from Yankee candle and a Yankee plug in, they last ages and my house smells yummy. I've got spiced pumpkin at the moment Smile

There used to be a Yankee candle shop near me, but I found the smells quite artificial, though the do smell quite realistically of apple pie etc, I find that quite strange to smell if I haven't been making a pie!

How about an oil burner? They're a tenner in The Body Shop, use a couple of drops of essential oil mixed with a little water. It's what I use instead of scented candles, I just buy a massive bag of unscented tea lights to stick underneath. I'm sure it works out more economical as well.

Most candles and incense sticks are way too chemically for my liking!

But if you do want a candle I recommend Diptyque (££££££ but divine) or Shearer (you can get them from Ocado)

I beg you not to use a plug-in, they are toxic! Hmm

I don't like any of that stuff. I like the housekeeper candles from lakeland, which get rid of any lingering cooking smells but aren't scented, then fling open all the windows. Clean and fresh is the best house smell.

I don't like air fresheners they give both DS and I headaches.

I have found some nice reed diffusers in TK Maxx, my favourite was a peppermint one - quite subtle but very fresh.

Once you have some nice bottles you can make your own reed diffusers which is more affordable.

Also love Yankee candles.

Another fan of opening windows here! Also drying washing outside when the weather is nice, nothing you can put in the tumble drier smells as wonderful.

I live in an area with lots of old houses which have the potential to become very damp. When we come back from holiday our house stinks to high heaven. It smells nice when we're in it but I know a lot of people whose houses are permanently damp smelling. I open windows/doors every day even in winter I have them slightly ajar. I make sure the bathroom is cleaned and dried daily, pots are dried and put away and sink cleaned and dried. Laundry needs to be dried on the line, in a drier, (I go to the launderette with my bedding and towels) or on hot radiators. Nothing worse than wet washing dangling around in a cold house for days on end. I also have a dog, I open the French doors several times a day, sweep for hairs and spray with air freshner and I don't think it smells doggy at all :-/
I have scented tea lights around which smell nice unlit and I light them in the evenings. I put bounce sheets down the radiators which smells nice and I clean with strong disinfectant which I love the very clean smell of.

Ours is also an old house that can smell a bit damp when we come back from being out, and especially when we've been away, so I try to air it as much as possible.

The current smell is the rather powerful peppermint essential oil I've put around the place to discourage mice. I quite like it, although it may not be to everyone's taste. The good thing is that the mice appear to dislike it and have moved out!

I know someone mentioned already. But scentsy really is fab. No nasty chemicals, no soot or smoke, no flame just fabulous smelling wax with safe gorgeous warmers x

Yankee candle cotton scented. Is all I will ever use. I love it.
