To think an 8yo should not be wearing makeup?

DD went to an adventure type party today and one of the girls turned up with bright and I mean very bright blue eyeshadow on, with bright red lips and blusher.

It was done reasonably well, so I wonder if mum had done it, she also had eyeliner on, but it didn't look good, in fact it sexualised her and it made me feel it wasn't right.

I didn't say anything, (too chicken, so just clutched my pearls!), another mum did and girls mum said, 'oh yes, she just loves wearing make up' giving a shrug as if she does what she wants.

AIBU to think, OK at home, but not out in public.

She only playing surely. Even if mum had done it might be a one off fun activity. The fact it didn't go with the party theme just shows that it wasn't considered? Some 8 year old still turn up in fancy dress - she might have thought she was a princess not coco the clown. Blushblusher overkill.

I don't even like my 6 and 4 year old having their nails painted, even though I know friends who are quite happy for their dc's to wear it. Make up is just a bit too grown up.

I don't like seeing kids wearing makeup

But having said that, it's not your place to say anything even if you weren't 'too chicken'.

What do you think criticising the woman's parenting would have achieved?

Little girls like make up. Its why there are long queues at face painting stalls. I wouldn't worry. Wish my mum could've shown me how to apply eyeliner. Save me looking like a panda by poking the brush in my eye.

YANBU to think it. I have a friend who let her girl go out to local events, fetes, fun days, meals out etc, wearing eyeshadow and lip gloss. She was 7 at the time. If they are just playing, then play with it at home, but dont wear it out. Makeup in public is for teenagers upwards, not little girls.....

Oh no Worral, I wouldn't have criticised, no, but might have said, like the other mum - I like the makeup!!!

Not my position to tell anyone how to aren't, but I did wonder if I was a bit of a prude - hence the thread.
