If it's putting them off, obviously it's not ok. But I know my DC listen to music in school, tuned quietly and on the condition that there is no/not much talking and it works fine and is an insentive to behave.

YANBU

I would expect something classical or at least lyrical with good musicality.
The teachers taste stinks Grin

Finola1step · 21/09/2013 20:09

It's not unusual to play particular music while children are working, such as classical music during creative writing lessons. But I would struggle to see the purpose of playing Beiber or One Direction. Oh, and I've been a primary school teacher since '96.

Finola1step · 21/09/2013 20:10

Possibly OK for warm ups at the beginning if a lesson. But very tenuous.

Preferthedogtothekids · 21/09/2013 20:15

I work in a High School where many teachers let the kids choose the music on a Friday afternoon. It plays in the back ground while they get on with projects. The threat is always there that it will be turned off if the work rate drops. I don't see a problem, it humanises the teachers and lets the kids think they're being treated better.

TheBuskersDog · 21/09/2013 20:19

Tantamount to abuse, making them listen to Bieber.

It depends on what work they are doing, playing music is fine and doesn't have to be classical, but I wouldn't play stuff they are going to stop working to sing along to.

LaFataTurchina · 21/09/2013 20:22

I remember getting to listen to music while doing silent work as a special treat in junior school. I think as long as the music's not inappropriate and the children don't mess about then it's fine.
