As in the society for the protection of unborn children. A staff member is displaying their petition by the register.

  1. I object to that organisation and question their motives.
  2. I don't fully understand this sex education thing but the above org are all edging it promotes porn in the classroom. Does it?
  3. Aibu to think a nursery shouldn't be promoting a radical org anyway?

Shocking, misguided and very unprofessional.

SuburbanRhonda · 20/09/2013 22:29

SPUC were invited into DS's year 10 class to talk to the students about abortion. I complained to the head of RE and got the visit cancelled. But before I did, I had the pleasure of speaking on the phone to their general secretary (can't remember his name) - he was absolutely barking.

When I explained how I would prefer my DS not to have sex before he was 16, but if he did, I would want him to be safe he said "You have heard of statutory rape, haven't you?"

Ghastly man and even ghastlier organisation.

utreas · 20/09/2013 22:38

Speak to the manager although I assume its been put up with the managements permission so I'm not sure what you can do. Wouldn't bother me though

SuburbanRhonda · 20/09/2013 22:41

utreas, visit their website and see if you still think they should just be ignored.

ouryve · 20/09/2013 22:43

it has no place in a nursery.

ouryve · 20/09/2013 22:46

If you're paying fees for this nursery, any chance of taking your money elsewhere? (then telling OFSTED why)

utreas · 20/09/2013 22:46

I'm aware of them but in a democracy they have a right to lobby for their beliefs particularly within private property. As I said speak to the management although I would think it has got their blessing so I don't think it will make any difference although if several people do then that might change their opinion.

friday16 · 20/09/2013 22:52

he said "You have heard of statutory rape, haven't you?"

A very telling remark. Abortion is at the heart of US "culture wars", and it's not surprising that SPUC people acquire the language of US law while lapping up US propaganda.

PeppiNephrine · 20/09/2013 23:16

And being totally funded by US anti-choicers with proven links to clinic bombers and doctor killers.

sashh · 21/09/2013 06:33

And being totally funded by US anti-choicers with proven links to clinic bombers and doctor killers.

Unfortunately they have financial support in the UK too. And a big influence in RC schools.

ILoveMakeUp · 21/09/2013 06:38

I am pro-life, but agree this has no place in a nursery.

SuburbanRhonda · 21/09/2013 16:49

SPUC isn't pro-life, it's anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti same sex marriage, anti-contraception and pretty much everything else that doesn't fit in with it's warped view of life.

friday16, I wanted to say to him that in the UK, probably all they could each be charged with is sexual assault of a child, but that in practice that would be unlikely. But this is not an organisation that is interested in logical discussion or rational thought of any description.

utreas, they do have the right of freedom of speech, but I'm not sure they have the right to lobby for their beliefs, especially when those beliefs trample on the rights of others.

slightlysoupstained · 21/09/2013 17:45

Any nursery doing this would be straight off my list, YADNBU to complain.

I'd hope the member of staff was just naive, but if she was actually an SPUC member, I would want to know she was not responsible for my child's care.

Anyone who condones clinic bombing and murdering doctors is not a fit person to look after children.

Hamwidgeandcheps · 21/09/2013 18:11

Slightly - or anyone - do you have any good links about why spuc are a bunch of nutters? Think I want to go in with some ammunition Hmm

I am considering withdrawing the dds because of this. This will be devastating and disruptive though

SuburbanRhonda · 21/09/2013 23:49

Ham, I would reserve withdrawing your DD as a last report.

If I can get a secondary school to cancel a visit by SPUC, and they were invited in by a fundamentalist Christian RE teacher, I'm sure you can get a petition removed.

In the meantime, this extract from the Education for Choice blog gives very clear evidence of why SPUC should not be allowed anywhere near an educational establishment:

friday16, I wanted to say to him that in the UK, probably all they could each be charged with is sexual assault of a child, but that in practice that would be unlikely.

Sex with a child under 13 is rape: Sexual Offences Act 2003, S.5. In statute, that doesn't depend on the age of the alleged perpetrator, aside from age of criminal responsibility issues.

However, as you say, it's highly unlikely that in the case of two people under 16 that a prosecution would be brought unless there were aggravating factors. The CPS guidance makes it pretty clear there's a set of tests that are highly unlikely to be met if the two parties were "consenting", even if they were legally unable to give that consent. A senior prosecutor would be involved, and it's clear from the guidance that it would be considered a child protection issue (of both parties) first, and a criminal case a long way second.

Suburban that was really helpful thank you.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/09/2013 14:42

Am slightly tempted to request 100 petitions from them just to waste their money... Wink

RubberBullets · 22/09/2013 15:24

Then send them straight back in an envelope without a stamp :)
