Can't believe some people

Yesterday my DP and I ran out of petrol on a very busy main road 5 miles away from a petrol station (dial is apparently buggered).

It was raining and because of how narrow and busy the road was it wasn't safe to wait in the car incase a lorry clipped it as it wad just passed a bend in the road (had a couple of close calls with DP getting out of the car so my DP and I had to stand in the rain with my 2 week old DD whilst we waited for a friend to fetch some fuel to get us to the garage and not a single person stopped to offer assistance.

It was a busy road but there was a layby about 100yrds away so it wouldn't have endangered someone else if anyone was kind enough to at least offer.

AIBU to have lost hope in humanity? If I drove passed a young couple obviously broken down holding a very small baby I wouldn't just carry on.

Sorry for the rant I just can't believe some people and needed to get it off my chest.

If it was a fast, busy road - which it seems like it was - there probably wasn't time for someone to really process what they saw. Come round the bend, spot the car, see two people - by that time you're gone (and presumably looking at the road ahead, not rubbernecking) so there really isn't time to stop, iyswim. I bet 99% of people didn't even see the baby.

I must admit I never considered the scam aspect I thought it was an urban legend.

I have got my DP to stop a few times if I see people with children as I know it can be quite scary (not the first time we have broken down we are jinxed with cars) and I at least offer to call for help I have been in a position of having a dead mobile.

It depends if another car could safely stop. Sad to say, there's more additional injuries & accidents probably caused by people trying to help.

To be very honest, where I am, most people probably would have stopped. I once stopped very suddenly in the car and pulled (I thought baby was choking), the car behind me stopped as well as they realised something was wrong.

Someone stopped when we flipped our car on the motorway once. He was in fact the only driver on the road at all (late Christmas Eve one year, the roads were empty). I would stop for someone in the same situation. If they appeared to be simply broken down I would assume they either had a mobile phone and called the RAC or had used the phone to call for assistance to be honest.

And to be fair, they probably never even registered you had a baby if driving themselves.

I don't think it's about being in a "shitty" area necessarily.

I have a disability that makes me very wobbly on my feet and I use a walking stick when out alone. I've twice fallen in the street (I trip over fresh air!).

First time was in a very naice part of Glasgow's West End. No bugger stopped (right outside waitrose!) and I had to pull myself up using a bin and a lamp-post. Second time was in the wee shopping arcade near where we live, on the edge of one of Glasgow's "big 4" housing schemes. I was helped up, brushed down, my shopping picked up, given a chair, a drink of water and a free cup of tea from the cafe and then was walked round to the taxi rank by 2 elderly men (one of whom had definitely been on the whisky at lunch!!). I like living in a shitty area!
