AIBU to want my DS to be a pirate rather than a king or a telly tubby?

DS has just started reception and has been invited to an all class party. It is fancy dress with a pirate theme. He point blank refuses to dress up as a pirate so will be returning pirate costume to shop tomorrow.

He wants to be a king or will settle for being a telly tubby. Someone has loaned me a king outfit and we already own a telly tubby outfit but suspect it might be on the small side.

He is one of the few who didn't attend school nursery and I know at 4.5 yrs, he won't care what people think (and I am proud of him for this) but I don't want other children etc laughing at him.

I was considering just sending him in ordinary clothes. AIBU?

Does he watch Swashbuckle on CBeebies? Might change his mind about the pirate outfit.

I'm a totak hypocrite about pirates.
we hosted a pirate murder-mystery party 2 years ago and it was great fun! especially the child-free bit!

I just don't like kids getting the impression that pirates are cool.

and don't get me started on fairies....

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 13:56

there had been female pirates. in fact some of them escaped the death penalty because they were pg.

but I don't know about any male princesses.
I wouldn't dress my son as a princess. and don't know anyone who do or would.

kissmyshineymetalass · 19/09/2013 14:00

I wouldn't dress him like a princess either, the kids would definitely laugh at him for that and he would probably always be known as the boy who dressed as a princess in reception

Therealamandaclarke · 19/09/2013 14:01

I don't think I'd send my DS to a party as a princess.
I wouldn't be bothered about him trying on a dress or whatever but apart from anything else he hasn't asked to go as a princess. A king is his male version of the princess theme.
So it's ok for this party.
He could take a portable gallows Grin
zing I reckon parenting is largely about hypocrisy.
And laundry Grin

Arrrr!

ChunkyPickle · 19/09/2013 17:20

Speaking of Swashbuckle (blithely disregards the topic) - I am scandalized that they don't seem to actually win a bike or skateboard or something when they get all the gems - not to mention virtual slime.. what a cop out! FunHouse was way better..

I'd let him go as a king... maybe with a stripy jumper or something so king of the pirates - it's within theme unlike too-small teletubby

RenterNomad · 19/09/2013 17:48

I don't like pirates, either!

Unfortunately, it was after I convinced DS of thus that ge started school and they are all fecking obsessed with pirates - had a whole bloody week about them! Twats. Grin

Real fairies are great. And lots of them are boys. As opposed to stupid, saccharine, pink plastic, overmarketed pretend fairies.

Therealamandaclarke · 19/09/2013 20:06

Real fairies are great Hmm Grin
Brilliant.
Like Peter Pan? He was a real fairy no?

ZingWantsCake · 19/09/2013 21:15

real fairies?Grin that's an oxymoron

My son was invited to a party and had to be dressed as a 'wild animal', we had a bear costume but he wanted to go as a pirate so that's what he went as. A few kids mentioned it but I'm proud to say he just shrugged it off and before long was herding lots of 'wild animals', with his sword! Grin

A pirate king?

Therealamandaclarke · 20/09/2013 19:55

Pirate king to keep with pirate theme.
Or king, (or prince?) to keep with princess/ royal theme.
Has he/ you chosen yet?
