To cry because I accidentally hurt my cat?

He was lying on my lap and I was reading a quite heavy book. He fidgeted around and stood up, making me lose my grip on the book, which fell on him. He leapt up and ran under the table, and spat at me Sad He was clearly terrified. He then hid behind the sofa. He is a rescue cat and that's what he did when I first got him home. He does it when he's really scared.

I sat with him and talked softly to him and eventually he came out. He is still nervous though. Heartbreaking to see him scared of me Sad. Luckily he is not hurt.

NB: I may be a little hormonal.

Always go for extra cuddles! I'm sure they understand if you immediately cudldle and look sorry - they look straight at the expresion of you so look scared initially but when they see your face is not anger and sorrow they come back

LillyNotOfTheValley · 19/09/2013 03:42

Well, OP, I am in the same situation with a very grudge bearing cat myself: I closed the garage door this morning with the remote before leaving and came back 10 min later feeling like something was not quite right - the cat was indeed trapped, the door had closed on her neck as she is too small for it to have detected it. I freedher and have been ffeeling awful since then. No purr no miaw to declare, she hates me. Vet says everything is fine but she seems decided to make me pay... I shall bear my punishment.

bootsycollins · 19/09/2013 09:06

I accidentally booted our boy last week, he was innocently eating his breakfast when I walked past carrying a huge pile of washing, I didn't see him just felt my foot connect with his body. Poor moggy ran off terrified and kept running away in the opposite direction when I approached him, I was really upset, I'd really hurt and scared him and we're normally best buddies. Took him half a day to get over it after lots of grovelling and Dreamies from me.

You've fallen for an age old cat trick, they over dramatise things like this because they know that the simple humans will fall for it everytime and give them yummy treats.

gingysmummy · 19/09/2013 09:18

i shut my kittens tale in the door i never saw him, he had to get it stiched and shaved he then had a very long tale. i had to get my darling gingy put to sleep in july he was 15 he never held the above incident against me but i still feel bad about it now

mrsjay · 19/09/2013 09:21

aww poor you I am sure your cat will forgive you, cats even rescue ones are quite hardy but they are skitterish too so yes the cat was scared,

I have a rescue dog and he hates unexpected noises so I am always scaring him he is getting better but sometimes he just quivers and I have only opened a door or something

when jaycat was alive i was always sitting on her or falling over her she was always under my feet she just had to cat up grin]

melika · 19/09/2013 09:21

I apologise profusely to my old doggy when maybe I have dropped something on him or shut his head in the door!

I really think he 'gets it' and it's all forgotten when he gets plenty of kisses and hugs.

livinginwonderland · 19/09/2013 09:24

I trod on my kittens tail the other day when she snuck up behind me in the kitchen and I stepped backwards without realising she was there. She ran off and hid and I had to really calm her down. I felt horrible :(

She's fine now though. In fact, when DP opened our bedroom door this morning, she catapulted in and jumped on me, so I'm sure your cat will be fine too :)

I cried once when I let the pony out of her stable just after she had come home from horsepital for an operation on her leg and was on VERY STRICT bed rest. For the first time in about 20 years I didn't close the stable door properly and as I walked up the yard she trotted past me bucking and snorting and it took me 10 mins to catch her as she bombed around on her very, very poorly, newly operated on leg.

When I caught her I sobbed into her shoulder for about half an hour as I was convinced I had permanently broken her forever!

I also twatted the dog over her head this morning with the metal end of the lead. Was bending down to fuss her for her perfect recall from a fields length away when she knew I had nothing smelly in my pocket and 'Dink' she got the clip on her little whippety head.

And when I was a kid I paralysed my sisters hamster by accident. I had cleaned him out for her (sister was younger) and left the top part of the cage on the table whilst I emtpied the tray. He pushed the top part of the cage to the edge of the table and fell off. He could only work his front legs after that. Mum went mad with me that it cost her £25 at the vets for a £4 hamster but he lived for 2 years with only his front legs working.

But the guilt I used to get as he used his wheel with his front legs and his back legs just bobbing about was baaaaaddddd.

Oh and another hamster commited suicide by forcing his head through the gap in the bars to try and get to the bag of food I'd left in sniffing distance. And I found him. And was mortified. And a gerbil I had drowned itself in the terrapin tank after I left the lid unfastened.

Strangly enough I don't do little furries anymore. Dogs and horses seem a bit more robust pmsl.

I once threw my cat out of the window , well not literally she was on the outside sill waiting to get it I opened the window went to pet her as she came in (she used to like a greeting ) and I knocked her off her feet and down she went It is true though cats do land on their paws Grin she did saunter off and didn't speak to me the rest of the day

Latara · 19/09/2013 09:44

I just let my cat out to have a fight with her best frenemy cat.

It's a bit mean on her frenemy and I feel guilty because my cat will win.

But she deserves some fun and it's his fault for walking across her garden!

VulvaVoom · 19/09/2013 09:49

I fell down the stairs in the middle of the night once and half landed on my cat, he did the same - hid under the table, growled and spat. I CRIED AT WORK THE NEXT DAY AND WAS SENT HOME Blush

Am honestly not like that normally!

QueenStromba · 19/09/2013 09:52

Our cat rarely goes a week without one of us kicking her, standing on her or sitting on her - she has a knack for managing to be where you're about to put your foot.

Binkyridesagain · 19/09/2013 09:57

My cat lies in the middle of the floor in the hallway, just so we can fall over him. I think he believes I've named him in my will.

mrsjay · 19/09/2013 10:08

Grin binky sometimes i think they like to trip us up for their own amusement

UtterflyButterfly · 19/09/2013 10:14

I was halfway through putting on a clean duvet cover once when I was distracted by the phone, so just left it on the floor. When I came back I picked up the two corners nearest me and kicked it up from underneath to shake the duvet into the corners of the cover.

Unbeknown to me, my Jack Russell had snuggled under the duvet while I was out of the room, so she also got kicked up with the duvet! She was fine, but very shocked - I was mortified and fussed over her for the rest of the day.

FreudiansSlipper · 19/09/2013 10:16

i dropped the cat bowl on my little soldiers head the other week :( he ran off looking scared hid behind the chair then escaped outside and would not come near me for a few days. this is a cat that follows me everywhere. i left his food by the catflap he would come in eat and rush out again. made me very sad i was worried but he was fine he sat in his little place in the garden

got his own back last week by bringing me a huge dead rat as a present. and i mean huge :( :( :( catflap now locked forever

Binkyridesagain · 19/09/2013 10:19

Freudian your cat shows you that you have been forgiven and you snub it like that, I wouldn't be surprised if he refuses to interact with you ever again. Grin

mrsjay · 19/09/2013 10:19

well here goes I once very nearly tumbled dried the cat Shock

she always used to jump in just after it was emptied one day I had emptied and refilled straight away turned round to load washing machine closed the dryer door with my bum (as you do) turned to switch it on and there was a wee face squashed up looking out the door Blush

livinginwonderland · 19/09/2013 10:19

some of these stories have really made me smile! evil pet owner Blush

Binkyridesagain · 19/09/2013 10:28

My other cat kept my DH very amused the other day. We have have a new back door and atm there is no cat flap in it. The old cat flap is perched on the bottom shelf of my bookcase, in front of books, waiting to be fitted. The cat decided he wanted to go out and instead of standing by the backdoor he decided to use the cat flap. He then spent 10 mins trying to get through the bookcase cat flap to no avail, he even looked at either side of the flap to see if he could work out what was preventing the flap from opening when he pushed.

FreudiansSlipper · 19/09/2013 10:31

i always thought my little soldier did not have i am superior cat mentality. he is very different from other cats i have known

my fear of rats is well known with my family and friends (have slight obsession with them, have to switch over when on tv etc). never in 9 years has he bought one in. frogs, birds and mice yes and nearly always alive.

he showed his disgust with us going away a few months ago by bringing a baby one home (dead) now this (monster rat i am surprised he could even kill tbh)

he knew he had pushed it too far and walked around looking sad as i was unable to cuddle him for a few days

we are best of friends again but both of us are on our best behaviour so its good for now we shall get past this :)

FreudiansSlipper · 19/09/2013 10:34

Binky that is something my cat would do

he is not very bright

Binkyridesagain · 19/09/2013 10:35

Never admit to any weakness when in the presence of a cat, they will use it against you.

Its good that you believe you are now friends but always be aware that he is creating a mental list of ways to act his revenge for when you next step out of line.

SummerRain · 19/09/2013 10:41

Our French doors are a bit sticky and need to be slammed shut. One of mine tried to run through the gap as I was slamming the door one day and I couldn't stop in time so ended up slamming the door on his head. I felt evil Sad

He was fine thankfully, just a bit dazed and he eventually forgave me.

It was an accident, it's not as if you intentionally scared him and he's not injured so don't worry too much, he'll come round Brew
