To not want to walk through a fug of cigarette smoke when I do my Tesco shop?

WF · 18/09/2013 07:44

The staff at my local Tesco store use the space by the trollies (immediately next to the main entrance) as a smoking park. The other day there were 6 staff there, puffing away, presumably on their break.

AIBU not to want to drag myself or children through that when I do my twice weekly shop? It's a large Tesco store and I know there is space around the side.

Isn't this an identical thread to one some months ago?

Thisisaeuphemism · 18/09/2013 10:39

Meh, it's crap, we have to walk through smoke to get to school - and the smokers hold their cigarettes at waist level so right in my kids faces.

FeetUpUntilChristmas · 18/09/2013 10:39

Personally I think that a bad on smoking in public places would be a good thing.
If I had to walk through staff smoking to get into any building where I was the customer I would complain. It s up to each company to set policy as to where staff can smoke and if they want to, to provide a shelter. If customers complain about the current situation maybe they will come up with a better solution or maybe they don't care.

For me the worst place is Heathrow Airport, just outside the arrivals doors it is a no smoking area but is always filled with smoke from employees, what a way to great visitors to our country.

Chattymummyhere · 18/09/2013 10:40

Dancer girl...

They they are not allowed to smoke by their children remember even when outside... So your saying its not ok to smoke outside with your children but you absolutely must smoke in your house in a confined space with your children?

Also most tenancy agreements state no smoking in the house....

How about we ban smoking outside when everyone has to smell nice and clean! And they then also have to dress a certain way you no like school kids being told what to do? I don't want to see lard overhang and I don't want to smell your pits a mile away and you don't want to see me(as in general person) smoke...

Would that be a fair deal?

Thisisaeuphemism · 18/09/2013 10:42

Its a good idea to ban smoking outside. I can't see the problem.

Smoke in your own house whats so bad about that?

AwayWithTheFay · 18/09/2013 10:42

I hate smoke off cigarettes! YANBU OP, I'd be annoyed too.

Dancergirl · 18/09/2013 10:44

chatty Where is the health risk of seeing 'lard overhang'?

gamerchick · 18/09/2013 10:47

I thought I was cracking up.. its word for word to another thread posted a while back.

Thisisaeuphemism · 18/09/2013 10:49

I posted in that one too! I like to have an anti-smoking rant every few months or so.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 18/09/2013 10:49

Complain. The staff are probably not allowed to do this.

pianodoodle · 18/09/2013 10:56

chatty Where is the health risk of seeing 'lard overhang

It puts me off my lunch!

Nicotine is an addictive substance. Personal comments about smokers' unattractiveness seem to be fair game which is sad and unnecessary.

It's considered unkind to point out the unattractiveness of someone who's hugely obese "it's not their fault how cruel etc..." as it's hurtful to their feelings. this is despite the fact that food isn't addictive! People go on about how "hard" it is to lose weight but are often the same people who refuse to believe how hard it is to give up smoking.

They wouldn't be helped by being told "just stop eating so much it's simple" but smokers are told that frequently and it's nonsense!

Thisisaeuphemism · 18/09/2013 11:02

An obese person doesn't make my kids asthma worse. An obese person doesn't dangle their fag in their faces. An obese person isn't making the environment worse for everyone.

I really don't get the comparison.

geekgal · 18/09/2013 11:11

What about the cars? They smell more, are more dangerous for your health, and more prevalent than smokers - I don't do either, by the way, but I hate demonizing one group over another for no good reason other than you're allowed to treat them like crap. It's like the last acceptable group you can get away with saying nasty things about so everyone has to join in the pile on because deep down we're all quite nasty people who like to say mean things. We've had all the other minority groups taken away from us so we'll pick on this one the government has designated "evil" (presumably because they get more in taxes from car users so you can't pick on them).

Nice...

AmberLeaf · 18/09/2013 11:16

Smokers used to have a smoking room in a lot of places where they went for their fag. This was stopped and they were moved outside where they get grief for smoking

If only there was a way to get them out of sight. Hmmm

Indeed.

I do think its good that the smoking rooms [or staffrooms as they are also known as!] are smoke free, I know a smoke filled room is horrid for non smokers, but people then moaning about smokers outside because of this is ridiculous.

How long do Tesco workers get for their break? how long would it take to go far enough not to piss someone off? I doubt their breaks are that long.

pianodoodle · 18/09/2013 11:18

Some people can be inconsiderate or rude whether they smoke or not unfortunately!

I just don't know what anyone hopes to achieve by making silly comments about the appearance of someone who smokes it serves no purpose whatsoever.

Passive smoking is a valid concern and enough in itself. Comments about smokers being unattractive or crowds of smokers looking "intimidating" are just daft.

WorraLiberty · 18/09/2013 11:21

I don't know how you cope with the trauma OP...

AmberLeaf · 18/09/2013 11:23

geekgal I agree.

I was going to ask if the anti smoke fug lot drive cars, that comparison never goes down well though because cars are necessary apparently.

Chattymummyhere · 18/09/2013 11:36

I only mentioned overhanging lard because like some don't mind walking though smoke some do...

I don't like seeing lard it puts me right off my food..

Cars cause lots of harm to people with breathing trouble... Ban them too?

Thing is all you wanting a complete smoking ban seem to forget that would be taking away a freedom we have and if freedoms are taken away where will it end? Make up/cars/pets/ fatty food/alcohol???

Pregnant women moan that coffee shops don't want to sell full coffee too them and lots of other places refusing to sell to them this is the same really... Lose one freedom and you will lose a lot how many pregnant women would be ok with having a law that states you can not eat x,y and z?? Not many I bet

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2013 11:40

I'm sure they'll get over it. After all, they probably come from one of the many countries where smoking is a lot more popular than it is in Britain.

About 20 per cent of people in Britain are smokers. I'm not one of them. It just doesn't bother me that much because the restrictions on it mean that I can generally avoid it.

So many of those discarded butts will have been smoked by foreigners having their first cigarette after spending several smokeless hours travelling to us.

They'll do the same thing going home.

Rooners · 18/09/2013 11:53

Yanbu. Complain to the store and they might add it to a list and then if the list gets long enough, they might move them.

Smoking outside as a knock on of the smoking ban really hacks me off. They banned it in the home next door to us and put their outdoor shelter right by our bloody porch.

Nanny0gg · 18/09/2013 11:53

...but we do ask you please to stick to our Talk Guidelines and to be civil

Strange definition of 'civil' on a lot of AIBU threads these days...

OP is entitled to an opinion. I happen to agree with her. I hate seeing groups of smokers outside entrances to buildings. You do have to walk through a fug and they tend to leave their detritus behind. Doesn't look good, doesn't give a good impression and certainly not enticing at the entrance to a food store.

If addicts smokers need to smoke during their working day, I do think, if possible, employers should provide a covered space for them rather than just chucking them anywhere outside.

pianodoodle · 18/09/2013 12:17

Don't cross out the "addicts" part Nannyogg! I actually think it's important for that aspect to be recognised.

Even some smokers themselves refer to it as a "habit" but it isn't as habits are much easier to break.

MyBaby1day · 18/09/2013 12:18

YANBU, I hate the habit and since it's been made illegal to smoke indoors we now have that problem!.

Nanny0gg · 18/09/2013 12:24

pianodoodle You are right, and I know this as my mother smoked all the while whilst dying from emphysema (so, I am admittedly a very biased anti-smoker).

So as it can be an addiction I do think employers should provide a space (should they do that for alcoholics too - also a 'legal' addiction) it should be away from the public.

It's dirty, smelly and foul.
