to think that the school should care, whether it happened on school property on not

I saw a boy I know, push a younger child face first into the road in front of a car. Fortunately the driver was very quick of the mark and swerved to avoid the child, who was lying face down on the road. Boy wasn't hurt. School decided that they wouldn't do anything as the incident was off school property. AIBU to think they should have done something?

Yes.

If it was out of school time then what can they do? It then becomes the responsibility of the parents (and if needed police)

blueemerald · 17/09/2013 22:21

How old were the boys? Did this happen on the way to or from school?
I'm a teacher and I have to say it is unrealistic to expect schools to deal with every event that happens outside school. I'd probably ring the police in this case.

I think it depends on the age of the children and whether parents were around.

If these were teenage children making their own way home then yes, I think that the school should get involved if there are incidents that are potentially dangerous.

15/16 year old pushed a yr 7 pupil into the road. No parents around.

My kids school would have acted. They take the view that anything that happens while students are in school uniform reflects on the school.

TigOldBitties · 17/09/2013 22:27

No, I would prefer schools to focus on what happens during the time children are there.

Outside of school time shouldn't be their responsibility too, its asking too much.

MaureenMLove · 17/09/2013 22:28

Well, there are 2 boys currently serving 5 days internal exclusion at my school, for taking a year 7 boys money off him, on the bus on the way home.

However, unless the yr 7 boy is prepared to share what's happened at school, there's not much they can do.

Souredstones · 17/09/2013 22:30

If they were in uniform then they represent the school and are partially the schools responsibility

We used to get a rollicking if we were seen in uniform smoking even if it was in the evening well away from school

blueemerald · 17/09/2013 22:36

At those ages I would call the police without a moment's hesitation. I would expect the school to back up the police/parents but not to lead the charge.

BrokenSunglasses · 17/09/2013 22:40

The school should act, and be involved with the police. Our school would, simply because what you described is an awful thing to happen and it needs to be dealt with somehow.

SummerHoliDidi · 17/09/2013 22:41

Our school would become involved, even if it was just to inform the police and pass on all relevant information. We do seem to be quite tough on behaviour around the town though, much tougher than any of the previous schools I've worked in.
