il's have sent dd1 a whsmiths gift card again for her brithday, they sent her one last year and I ended up buying it off her. they send quite a lot (£40) and dd was looking forward to buying some uniform for guides with it. I know I sound ungrateful but there is nothing dd wants in whsmith, tere isnt really anything I want. Anyway I know IABU but seriously I dont have £40 spare to buy it off dd and it seems like a waste of money.

clara, you cannot use MN to promote your business without paying for it. I have reported your posts as spam.

Why is your dd looking forward to buying guides uniform with money she doesn't even know that she's going to get? That sounds very rude!

You have to be careful with WHSmith gift cards as they can have short expiry dates.
I no longer give gift cards as I think money is more appriciated and you don't risk it getting 'expired'

Do what I did with my dd stupid whsmith gift card...swap it for a different gift card in wh smith! They sell loads, new look, Claire's accessories etc!

We spent flippen ages trying to find something she wanted in there then found you can swap/buy the different gift cards with them too!

WHS is generally overpriced, although some bargains. I wouldn't hold on to it too long though in case they go the same way as other high street names - gift cards are the first thing to be cancelled by recievers.

I'm really confused as to why people are worrying about the prices in WHS for spending a gift card. It'll be free to you, so why worry?

One of my ds's got one for his birthday from grandparents just over a month ago.

He is quite significantly disabled both physically and learning so it was a total waste of there money.

And you cannot swop them for other gift vouchers or even the experience vouchers at all I tried they will not let you,I ended up buying it from him and re gifting it to another child (one who can actually read and hold a pen)

Blimey, slightly ungrateful. The inlaws could have gone into whs and bought her something of their choosing, but instead have given her the choice.

WHS has certainly gone down hill over the years, but it still sells plenty of nice things.

In my opinion, a gift card is much nicer than 4 mucky tenners.

Recycle it onto someone else who will use it as an xmas pressie

The price does matter because say if you want to buy 10 books - in whs it costs £40 but you can buy the same set of books for £10 from book people. If the IL had sent money then the girl could have bought the books from book people and still have £30 left to spend. It also matters because if a shop isn't perceived very positively - competitive pricing being one factor (as can be seen from this thread) then it is maybe more likely to be in financial difficulty and so a gift card may at some point become worthless.

I find this bizarre. £40 is incredibly generous. If someone bought me a Waitrose voucher, I wouldn't think 'that is really crap - I can buy stuff so much cheaper in Aldi'. It isn't your money - it is a gift.
I find it more alarming that a girl your daughter's age cannot find anything she wants to buy in WHSmith and would rather buy some guide uniform. Seriously?! If she is into guides, then I guess she likes reading and games and crafts. Magazines?
As a child, I would have loved that gift. Lots of nice new books and stationary for school.
If you don't have £40 to spare, why are you pandering to her ingratitude and buying it from her? Sorry OP, but you will have gathered by now that I think you are being very unreasonable.
And as for the people who slate WHSmith, bet you'd be sad to see it disappear. It is our online shopping that makes places like this suffer.

I used a WHSmith voucher to buy a New Look voucher, it was 3 years ago but the cashier said it was fine. Worth asking before you sell it for less than £40/buy something you don't really want
