Something been bugging me since thursday night.

Her appearance on bbc2 newsnight thuraday

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b039xq0j/Newsnight_12_09_2013/

where she claims kids on free school meals don't have books at home or arrive at school with communication skills!

Its bit of sweeping generalisation.

when books are cheap at car boots and charity shops.

when they made cuts to book start
closed down sure start centres

yet she bangs on about importance of early year education.

yet plans to remove

childcare vouchers for low incomes both parents have to be be 10k each and working.

Increase ratios or have they scrapped that idea.

kept banging on about early years teachers.

my ds preschool staff level 2/3 got paid less than the cleaner,

increase testing with national ranking at 5 all things that make mockery out of efys curriculum.

she doesnt want scandanavian as they invest in early years,

all uk education does is not invest.

make assumptions based on class/income/demographic I know plenty parents who avoid schools with high %school meals.

start too much too soon making most kids feel like failures as no flexiblity start dates and not enough good school places for all as they cant plan that right either.

Her attitude is horrible.

Hideous sweeping generalisation.

Yes, there are people who work hard, for long hours, for very little pay, and family life can suffer because of this - but the solution is to ensure higher wages, a secure social system, and a better standard of living for everyone. Not to make sweeping generalisations and belittle people while cutting resources from the education sector and families.

I think as a percentage, kids on FSM are less likely to have books at home and more likely to arrive at school lacking communication skills. But of course she's wrong if she means it literally.

Think you are thinking of Lynne Truss Servalan!

PresidentServalan · 15/09/2013 00:33

And YABU saying she shouldn't still have a job because 'she is a snob' - she has an opinion in something, which some will agree with and some won't - she is entitled to voice it.

PresidentServalan · 15/09/2013 00:34

Ignore me - I think I should go to bed now - too much Wine!

mam29 · 15/09/2013 00:45

I had too much vino too tonight.:)

shes entitled too opinion yes but her disdain /generlsation

It seems odd its not ok discrimnate on gender sexuality or colour yet poor are fair game.

many send their kids too nearest shitty primary as thats only place they can get,
majorty would say 90%uk use their free preschool hours at nearest mediocre preschool not rely years excellence trust talks abouts

Her mouth may speak
But actons dont match her words.

www.telegraph.co.uk/education/10305030/If-we-care-about-the-poorest-children-education-must-start-early.html

read her wiki shes intelligent.

yet is not listening.

they not saying no education until 7.

they saying more informal until year 3.

if early year so vitl why stop at fundng 15hours why not more?

OP posts:
jasminerose · 15/09/2013 09:37

There is now free 15 hours childcare for every 2 year old in a low income household, wherher the parents is working or not. If your on low income why would you need childcare vouchers?

mam29 · 15/09/2013 10:31

my argument was they say preschool educations important.

funding kicks in term after 3rd birthday.

very few parents are eligible for 2year old grant theres strict criteria.

removing childcare vouchers means working parents ie will struggle with cost of preschool.

when i sayvouchers its the salary sacrafice where parent works and saves a small amount on tax its not a fortune but every little helps.

daughters preschool said if she dident start in sept couldent guarantee a place.

shes sept birthday so got funding jan .
so spent 500quid on fees so she could start at 3.

its balancing education and childcare.

I just dont see how they invested much in early years so far its all talk

Both my daughters have done nursery early on can see advantages and so do others but the cost is high one..
