To think you don't go through other people's cupboards...

I've just come back off holiday for a week. Whilst we were away our neighbours (also friends of ours) offered to feed the cats.
Anyway, when we got back I popped over to say hello, thanks etc and she said this:
"I only had to raid your cupboards once - seems you have everything apart from the chopped tomatoes I wanted. It's such a pain in the arse when the co-op is closed"

I was a bit taken aback and like a twat ended up semi-apologizing for my lack of tomatoes! When I got home and told DH he was quite pissed off and said he thought that wasn't on at all and you don't help yourself.
they're moving out in December Grin

Well did you pay them to feed your cats?

McNewPants2013 · 14/09/2013 18:47

What cheek.

LovesBeingOnHoliday · 14/09/2013 18:48

Defo not on

ninjini · 14/09/2013 18:49

YANBU, she could have replaced the items once the co-op was open again, how rude!

SpottyDottie · 14/09/2013 18:53

What?? You don't raid cupboards! U less she meant it as some kind of joke?

SpottyDottie · 14/09/2013 18:53
  • unless
catgirl1976 · 14/09/2013 18:55

Very cheeky

If she had said "I'm really sorry but I ran out of xx and I pinched some from your cupboard as I was desperate and the shop was shut" it would be a bit better

If my neighbour tried that she'd be knocked on the head by tumbling tins though

GobTheGoblin · 14/09/2013 19:00

Cheeky mare!

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 14/09/2013 19:03

Captain - I offered to pay but offer declined. I bought them gift to say thanks. But even if not you don't help yourself to food do you?!

I wouldn't care if it was a close neighbour/friend.

Is only kitchen cupboards and if they were feeding my pets for me they'd be welcome to whatever.

If it was bedroom drawers I'd be feeling slightly differently though..!

teenagetantrums · 14/09/2013 19:13

I always assume people will have a look around in cupboards ect if left alone in my house, i have done the same, as to the tin i could care less if they borrowed something.

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 14/09/2013 19:20

It would never cross my mind to go through someone else's cupboards! Why?? What possible interest can there be in pasta and beans??

OP posts:
elcranko · 14/09/2013 19:47

I wouldn't be happy about it but probably more so because I'd be embarrassed about the amount of junk in my cupboards Smile

Bet she just wanted to have a good nose! I get she made up the story about the chopped tomatoes in case you realised that stuff had been moved around and knew she'd been poking around.

PeppiNephrine · 14/09/2013 19:56

I would do this with one or two close friends/family, and they would to me, but only because we know each other well enough to know we wouldn't mind.
But then I wouldn't give the key to my house to someone I knew any less well than that. Do you think perhaps she thinks you are closer than you are, and that you wouldn't have a problem with it?

Larrygogan · 14/09/2013 20:06

I've fed the neighbours' cats while they were away, and not only did I not so much as glance in their cupboards, I didn't go into any room other than the kitchen, where the food etc was. I would be horrified at anyone poking around my house, even if they were doing me a favour!
