Why would you claim DLA for a dodgy reason (you have an issue but not as bad as you claim, as otherwise you wouldnt get the money) and then coach a sports team, or run a marathon or do a window cleaning round or labouring or hod carrying......

Why?

If you claim your bad back is so painful you cant dress yourself, why would you then do one of the above AND tell your team/colleagues/customers about your claim?

ANDDDDD why would you then be surprised that you got taken to court for fraud and blame the person/people that dobbed you in?

This has just happened to someone I know (not a friend, through an old job) and they seem to believe that it isnt their fault but the fault of the whistleblower!

If you are going to commit benefit fraud, at least try to be subtle about it!

There is some staggering stupidity in the land of Fraudsters - I used to work for HMRC investigations, and you would be surprised how many people don't think it through when under declaring their income.
i.e we get the bank statements showing outgoings £25k, person declared income £10k......Hmm

Imagine having a sprained ankle but telling the DLA you broke your leg and will never walk normally again. Its that kind of level.

They'd have to have medical evidence surely? DH is a doctor and regularly had to write reports on people's illnesses or injuries for DLA.

OP that's horrible that DLA has turned your DS down, if he didn't get specialist help when filling out his forms then it's worth reapplying with some help from a charity/carer centre.

I get DLA for mental health reasons and can appear perfectly fine. I don't work but I can study, socialise and do leisure activities. I still have an enormous level of difficulty but I tend to keep it hidden, literally only my DH and CMHT know but I'd be horrified if anyone else found out. I do live in fear a bit of getting suspected for fraud, so I just don't tell anyone that I'm claiming - that way, they won't think about reporting me. I do actually think it's not advisable to be open with others about DLA/PIP claims as the general public (and even those who work in health/mental health) often completely misunderstand the criteria.

PomBearArmy · 14/09/2013 22:06

OP, your son definitely should qualify for DLA! Don't give up, contact a cerebal palsy charity and ask if someone would come out and help you fill the forms in, or if they have any guidelines.
