AIBU?

To think we shouldn't have to pay for this school dinner?

My son has packed lunches, and one day this week he couldn't find his lunch box so they gave him a school dinner. He put it on the rack with the others but at lunchtime the one that was left to take wasn't his.

Then the next day I sent him in a lunch, and he found his full lunch box which he brought home.

We have had a letter from school saying we owe them £1.80 for the school dinner he had!!

We will pay it, but will send in a note saying we sent him with a lunch so weren't expecting to pay for one.

So Aibu to think we shouldn't have to pay for it?

I'd just pay for the meal and be glad that the school were able to provide a replacement meal for your son.

YABU
Would you have also complained if he didnt get any lunch and came home hungry?

What if they hadn't provided him with a lunch? You'd be moaning that he had nothing to eat!

1.80 is not a lot for the peace of mind your son is looked after... Lunchbox issue aside. I can't believe you would be annoyed over that.

My DC have all left school now, but in 18 years of dealing with schools I've had to pay a couple of times for lost/forgotten lunches.

It would have entered my head to not pay, or to quibble about it.

I wouldn't bother sending the note in with your DS, you'll become known as "that" parent.

Just pay up, and £1.80 and even if you haven't got that money right now, just pay it as soon as you can.

Um..OP did say she was going to pay so don't all jump on her!

My DS had an emergency lunch, as he couldn't find his lunch money (in his bookbag) we had a note home but they didn't ask for the money back, so I took £2 in to the school office to repay them. Surely you would want to repay?

God just pay the £1.80 you would be angry surely if he lost his lunch and they never fed him.

Of COURSE you should pay! Jesus.

You are moaning about 1.80 that provided your son with a meal when he could have had nothing to eat? YABU, stop being petty.

I'd pay, atleast he was fed, not the schools fault someone took the wrong lunch.

Next you'll be asking the childs parents to stump up the money.

HappyMummyOfOne · 13/09/2013 16:34

Of course you should pay and be thankful they looked after him and ensured he was fed.

What would you prefer them do, leave him hungry rather than pay 1.80?

I'd be annoyed if it was a regular thing but pleased that on this occasion my DC was fed. Dd's school doesn't do hot meals so dd would just go hungry if she list her lunch box.

If he ate the school dinner, then you should pay for the school dinner!

It's really that simple.

Just be grateful that there was enough food left that day.

Dont send with a note, not worth it. if it happens again. they might think twice about giving a lunch to any child with lost dinner. its annoying but these things happen

It's annoying that your son's lunch box went astray but I would just write it off as one of those things. Don't send the note it will get schools back up and it's unnecessary to point out that you weren't expecting to pay for lunch, that much is obvious by the fact you sent in a packed lunch in the first place.

There school does not make extra meals on the off chance a child has no lunch. The school cook makes the exact number of meals for the number of children who have ordered a hot lunch that day.

I assume you have a massive sticker on his lunch bag with his name and class on, do you?

One poor kid made a mistake - for all you know they didn't like the lunch you made your DS!

Of course you should pay for the school dinner.

Erm I'd be annoyed that someone else took my child's lunchbox tbh which is what seems to have happened.
Presumably the child has packed lunches because the OP either can't afford school lunches or would prefer him not to have them.

Report
SPBisResisting · 13/09/2013 16:54

The OP has paid twice for a meal her DS probably didn't eat.
