To wonder if I should report this person to the police?

A school run mum hit my car yesterday while I was dropping my kids off at their classrooms. This morning a witness, thank god, left a note on my car windscreen leaving the other cars registration number and saying she'd seen the driver hit my car while trying to park hers. I've spoken to the witness who says the driver hit my car while pulling into the parking space in front of me, got out of hers to look at the damage to my car (lots of BIG scrapes, she couldn't have missed them!) and hers, got back in her car, drove off and parked further away. The driver left no details on my car.

I'm dealing with the insurance company but I'm wondering if I should report her to the police for failing to stop at an accident and leave her details? She clearly knew she'd caused damage to my car and drove off to park elsewhere, leaving no details.

Yes you should, absolutely.

WaitMonkey · 13/09/2013 12:36

Glad you've decided to report it.

SeaSickSal · 13/09/2013 12:39

Hmm, is it not at all possible that the 'witness' might have done it and be fingering someone else with the blame?

NotEnoughJamOnTheBread · 13/09/2013 13:07

Well, I've been down to the police station and I've completed the forms which I have to post off to the Traffic Justice Unit. I parked in the same space today and I really do think that was the opportunity for the woman to speak to me as it was the same parking space at the same time of day.

I really do think she had no intention of saying anything and hoped she would get away with it.

Well done - you have done the right thing. I have dinged someone's car in the carpark, and I waited until he came back to his car so I could own up in person. I bet she would be furious if someone dinged her car and drove off without leaving a note or owning up.

I've been on the other side of it too - someone scraped my car in the gym car park, and I was called out of the swimming pool so the staff could hand on a note from her with her details. As it happens, the scrapes basically polished off, and I texted her to say thank you for leaving me your details, but there is no lasting damage, so don't worry.

toffeelolly · 13/09/2013 13:52

You have done the right thing.

DuchessFanny · 13/09/2013 14:00

I agree that you've done the right thing !

I was hit as I was driving. Other car slowed but the drove off. A witness kindly passed the details. I didn't report it as I didn't think the police would be too fussed. No injuries etc. However, now having huge battle with her insurance who maintain 50:50 despite independent witness etc. who says clearly other person's fault. Wish I had reported the stoopid woman.

sashh · 13/09/2013 14:05

Report her, as someone has already said next time it could be a child.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 13/09/2013 14:13

Report her! This sort of thing boils my piss!

Someone backed into my car, and you should have heard the language I used when I found the damage in the morning - I went apeshit. Yes, it's an OLD car, but it's MY old car, and I hadn't had it very long. However, the lady that hit it HAD left a note, which immediately calmed me down. I called her, and all was sorted within a week very very amicably without involving the insurance.

Neighbor said it was karma, as we'd backed into her car a few years before, and I'd left her a note too Smile.

No reason why school run mom couldn't have done the same.

NotEnoughJamOnTheBread · 13/09/2013 15:44

Well, I parked at the school for the final time this week and again, no contact from the driver. I even left early and walked the entire length of the street hoping to see her car and take pictures of her damage but she wasn't there. In my mind that was her last chance to do the decent thing and come forward if she'd perhaps been in a panic immediately after the incident. The police forms have been filled in, I've spoken to my witness via text and she's given me her address to fill out on the forms as well. They're being posted tonight!

Glad to hear it OP. (that you reported it)

She'll be getting a call from a nice policeman soon Grin

mylittlesunshine · 13/09/2013 17:04

I bumped into someone's car in the ice once when mine slid and ended up denting his, I felt terrible and was writing my details as he came back. He was so kind about though, I was really upset and he honestly couldn't have been nicer, even phoned me later that night to check I was okay. I got his car fixed ASAP and it was all done amicably which was good.

On the other end of the scale someone reversed into me, he got out of the car and said oh there's no damage and was apologising and saying he didn't see me etc and I came round to look and I pointed out the damage he completely turned when I asked for his details getting nasty and threatening me. I was so scared, he never did give me details just drove off really quickly leaving me stood there terrified. Asshole.

I'm glad you reported her, she had every opportunity to do the right thing and she chose not to.

NotEnoughJamOnTheBread · 13/09/2013 17:09

Well at the very least if it gives her a sleepless night like the one she gave me worrying about how I was going to find the money for the excess it'll be worth it Smile

We were having a dinner party in my friends home when we ran out of a vital ingredient, so the man of the house rushed out and got it from the local supermarket.

He came back all flustered with the item and we carried on with the evening. About 4 hours later there was a knock on the door. It was one of the neighbours who lived on their development on the entrance road (think cul details sac development) and a police man

The man of the house had hit this chaps car on the way out of the estate got out, had a look then carried on. Thing is he got done for three things....Not stopping after an accident, failing to report an accident and careless driving. 9 points plus a fine, but also because he was only in his first year of holding a full licence he had it removed and had to do the who, especially testing process again.

Stupid bugger.

Consequences!
