To perform minor surgery on myself?

Serious question.

I have a sebaceous cyst on my earlobe. It's been there about two years and is the size of a pea. It's not sore or painful, but it's quite obvious & I feel self conscious about it.

I also want to get my ears pierced (finally!) but can't while it's there.

The doctor won't do anything because it's purely cosmetic & causing me no problems at all.

So....I'm thinking.....what if I clean the area really well with antiseptic wipes, sterilise a craft scalpel, make a small cut over the top and squeeze the bugger out (making sure the sack comes too)?

I am a sporner and feel quite excited at the thought of squeezing it out (Blush) but obviously don't want to do myself a serious mischief.

What do you think?

My brother had one just between his eyebrows above his nose. It used to just swell up and start oozing pus which would dribble down at random moments...unfortunately as a barman it didn't look to good to the customers lol. It was a few months until the doctor cut it out. I was itching to have one...weeks of squeezing fun!

Save up for a private GP appointment if you can?

Are these full of fluid or solid? Trip to the needle bank to get some free needles to suck it out

Its World Sepsis day, please don't give yourself blood poisoning today.

If you really have to cut it out yourself do it at the back so that any scars are hidden and make sure you know the symptoms of infection and sepsis so you can get help if you need it.

I did one myself, on my inner thigh, could NOT get the bloody sack out though and then it kept going septic ( very satisfying popping a septic one though- RIVERS of ooze!) Had to have sac removed with a local, docs will do it if it keeps going bad... good luck!

threemyselfandI your DH's lump in his mouth - I had one and it was an infection - I ended up with a root canal as a result. He needs to go to the dentist for that.

Report
plummyjam · 13/09/2013 11:47

Seriously don't do it. If you suck the fluid out with a needle it will come back. Removing the sac can be difficult even if you're not operating on your own head. If you don't have a proper local anaesthetic it will hurt like fuck and you'll probably get an infection.

The ear is also a prime place for keloid scars so if you're unfortunate to get one on the site of a raggedy cut made with a craft knife then you will quite literally have made a pig's ear of it.

OP my daughter has a small pea sized one on her knee. It hurts her if she bumps it. Her GP is happy to remove it for her. Maybe try again and tell them it's giving you pain.

DH had an horendous boil on his back a couple of years ago. I will never forget the joy of the 3 evening squeeze fest to get rid of that beauty Grin Copious amounts of kitchen roll and allot of very loud eeeeeeeews from the DCs. Sadly it never returned.

Tmi alert!

A while back, I had a small white lump on my gentleman's area. Quack of a GP said it was spermatocele, which is a sort of rudimentary extra nad. Go me, eh?

That was two years ago, and it grew very very slowly. Last Monday, after a long and chafing bike ride, it got painful. At 4 am, it woke me up. 7mm across, proud and pointy it was. Stuck in a pin.

PFFFLLLPPP! Oh yes. And then: THE CHEESECAKE.

DW is a bit cross at missing out, but there are limits to my bravery.

  1. it will bleed like buggery because ears have a fantastic blood supply

  2. if it gets infected, no one will ever be able to remove it properly - after seb cysts have been infected, you can't just shell them out

  3. Even a minor ops referral costs the NHS at least £60 (if done by a GP) and £200 if done in hospital. The NHS has enough problems without shelling out to shell out everybody's cysts.

  4. Even if you do manage to remove it yourself, you will be left with a scar that may well be more unsightly than a cyst.

Leave it alone. And I say this as someone who once drained her own dental abscess with a Swiss army knife Smile. If you really can't live with it, ask for a private referral.

OP. Are you mental.

All the "ooh squeeze it, film it" fetish and fun aside, you will probably not do too much damage to yourself. But you won't get rid of it either. You'll make it temporarily smaller, and bloody sore.

And the risk of septicaemia is huge. Which is the obvious big no no.

Just don't. You just need a less jobsworth doctor, tell him it's started causing you a lot of discomfort. They'll take it off no problem.
