Aibu about mil and chicken pox?

Pinupgirl · 12/09/2013 10:09

My mil has shingles. She phoned dh to tell him and to find out if we have all had chicken pox.

My youngest dcs have never had it and I believe you can contact chicken pox from shingles as they come from the same virus?

We usually go to inlaws for sunday dinner. Mil has told dh that she will phone on Friday to let us know if we are still to go for dinner.

Aibu to tell dh that we are not going? Although if the dcs were to contract the pox I know its not the end of the world,I would prefer them not to be exposed to it when they have just started back at school.

Aibu?

YANBU, it won't hurt to miss one dinner.

BanjoPlayingTiger · 12/09/2013 10:35

You definitely can catch chicken pox from shingles as that is how my dd caught it, however you have to be in close contact with the person with shingles and if they have the rash covered it would be very difficult (though not impossible) for your kids to catch chicken pox.

I am not a medical person, this is just what i was told by the dr when my dh had shingles.

BanjoPlayingTiger · 12/09/2013 10:36

Oh, but YANBU to say you arent going!

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 12/09/2013 10:36

I thought you couldn't catch chicken pox from shingles?

LookingThroughTheFog · 12/09/2013 10:36

she will phone on Friday to let us know if we are still to go for dinner.

YANBU simply on grounds that you shouldn't be instructed to do anything. They can invite you; you can decline. That's how non-controlling people operate.

SalaciousBCrumb · 12/09/2013 10:37

"If you've been poorly, the last thing you'll need is all of us coming for dinner. You have a rest.... No, no, I wouldn't hear of us all imposing on you... See you next week."

[phone down]

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 12/09/2013 10:43

I stand corrected. According to the NHS website people who haven't had CP can catch it if they come into contact with the fluid from the blisters you get with shingles.

diddl · 12/09/2013 10:45

You go every Sunday?

Do you enjoy it?

Give it a miss for once!

elcranko · 12/09/2013 11:17

Maybe you have a better relationship with your ILs than I do OP, but seeing them every single Sunday would annoy the shit out of me. I'd be happy that there's a good excuse for you not to go Smile

And I agree with you about not wanting to risk the DC getting CP too.

Pinupgirl · 12/09/2013 11:26

I have posted about this before-yes we went EVERY sunday for years. It caused a lot of problems with dh and I.I finally put my foot down last year and told both dh and mil that we wouldn't be going every sunday. Things have been a lot better since then.

I am going to take the advice here and phone mil and tell her we not going down.

"Mil has told dh that she will phone on Friday to let us know if we are still to go for dinner."

You see that's the bit that sounds odd to me tbh.

She so badly wants control, it seems over "her" Sunday?

Most people would say, "not been well, don't want to risk the kids here-see you next week instead?"

But not the announcement of the illness coupled with another call to say yes or no-she's looking at as though you're desperate to go & a no will be a disappointment, I think.

ilovepowerhoop · 12/09/2013 12:33

you can catch chicken pox from shingles but only through direct contact with the fluid from the blisters. If the rash is covered then there is little chance of that happening. Maybe she is phoning on Friday to see whether she is up to having you over rather than instructing you to go.

moanymandy · 12/09/2013 13:55

You are unlikely to catch chickenpox unless you actually have contact with the rash. unlike chickenpox its not an airborne virus (for want of a better expression)
I know this as my dsis has recently had it and I'm pregnant so called the gp to check Smile

moanymandy · 12/09/2013 13:57

I second what ilove said: she is likely to be very poorly and not up for cooking. My dsis was poorly for weeks with it. And the rash is really not nice!
