To despise and detest low-fat yoghurt?

Who came up with these abominations? Of all the things in my diet I worry about the fat content of (mainly cheese tbh), yoghurt never has and never will be.

What I do worry about though, is sugar, which is everywhere and which "low-fat" yoghurt is pumped full of.

So why are there so many low-fat yoghurts available? Is it cheaper for the manufacturers? And why do I have to hunt high and low and scrutinise ingredients to find one that says, simply, 'milk'? Angry

I've been getting really annoyed with yoghurt lately - I'm sure I actually mutter to myself in the supermarket.

I want to buy some yoghurt for my skinny 4 year old that isn't full of crap and has some calories in it. The list of ingredients on some yoghurt is so long.

I'm thinking of getting a yoghurt maker.

I'll try the Lidl Greek yoghurt first though.

FingerPicker · 11/09/2013 23:25

Worth bearing in mind that many low fat yogs such as Muller Light contain gelatine, bleugh.

As a vgetarian I find it really bloody annoying when I can't find a fucking yoghurt to eat.

Full fat = scrum :)

magicberry · 11/09/2013 23:37

I agree - full fat all the way (but for semi skimmed mil, although coffees need whole milk). No weight issues here - the fat stuff is more filling anyway!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/09/2013 23:57

No no no, i dont do low fat versions of anything except for milk (semi-skimmed). i do love Rachel's organic full fat stuff but noticed someone sayi it's full of rice starch?! Am shocked!

Morloth · 12/09/2013 00:00

I hate low fat anything.

Fuck that. We all eat butter and cream and real food.

What we don't eat is a lot of processed food.

Basically if I read the box and it has numbers involved, I don't buy it. Cuts down on all sorts of crap.

I love low fat or 0 fat Greek yoghurt its not got sweeteners and low on sugar. I sprinkle it with a bit of sugar since it can be a bit tangy for me, or top with fruit. The lowest I've found in calories I love it.

But the non Greek yogurts I really don't like them

FastWindow · 12/09/2013 10:20

I've always hated spreads and will only eat lurpak. Laughing into my toast now that they have discovered marg is bad for you.

Kezztrel · 12/09/2013 15:15

I hate low fat anything. I also hate yoghurt. So YANBU.

PavlovtheCat · 12/09/2013 21:32

fast have they? YEY! I have preferred butter over spread, DH buys it from time to time, but I so prefer butter, it tastes less crappy.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2013 21:40

The one sort of low fat yogurt I like is the Onken low fat natural set - it has a lovely taste and texture. But both ASDA and Sainsbos seems to have stopped stocking it recently so I'm having to get the full-fat version which I find just a tad rich for brekkie, which is when I eat it (with fruit, mixed seeds and nuts).

My favourite yog is Langley Farms banana - whole milk yog, added ingredients banana, cane sugar and ... nope, that's it.

seaweedhead · 12/09/2013 21:44

YANBU- its almost always full of rubbish, as are most "diet" foods.

FastWindow · 13/09/2013 21:29

Well pavlov they did some research that showed the marg eaters were no healthier for having eaten that rather than butter. I just don't trust marg. Synthetic slimy stuff. Butter's just milk that someone has shaken a lot.

Alohomora · 13/09/2013 21:38

YANBU.

I miss 'half-fat' yoghurt, I used to be able to buy 1.8% fat ones that were fine. I now make my own, not much hassle and no nasties, just mix with home-made jam and yummy!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2013 22:41

With marg, its the harder stuff which is particularly bad for you. The hydrogenation process which converts some of the unsaturated fats to saturated (which turns liquid oil solid) also converts some of the natural cis isomers to trans and these are now reckoned to be especially unhealthy.

cumfy · 13/09/2013 23:22

I love it.

I'm not sure it's compulsory though.

MrsMook · 13/09/2013 23:33

Yoghurt is one of the reasons I shop at Lidl. In the mainstream supermarkets it's too hard to find a straightforward yoghurt. I don't do low fat if I can help it.

Low fat yoghurt does nothing to fill you up so you only end up snacking later on anyway.

FesterAddams · 14/09/2013 00:51

Total full fat Greek yoghurt has 3.8g of sugar per 100g, so significantly lower than the low-fat yoghurts posted above.

My scheme for eating healthily is simply to avoid anything that someone's great-grandmother wouldn't recognise - and that includes anything described as "low fat".

perplexedpirate · 14/09/2013 08:29

YANBU. I have to hunt high and low in't Tescos to find a non-fucked-about-with yogurt. I always thought making your own was a bit 'Holland and Barret', but I'm thinking of giving it a go.

hardboiledpossum · 14/09/2013 09:16

I always eat full fat options, yogurt, olive oil, butter.
I'm a size 6. I think there have been studies that show that people who choose low fat options are on average fatter.
