AIBU to complain about noise?

I feel like I am.

Basically, the house next door (semi detached) to us was sold last may and is currently being renovated, obviously with this comes a certain level of noise, I completely understand this. But we were never consulted on any disruptions ( a quick, hi we're going to be doing some loud work, just a heads up would have sufficed).

I have 2 young DC who normally sleep well, but with drilling beginning at 7am most day and continuing until 6pm (the walls shake and photo frames have fallen off the central wall between the houses), they've been irritable, I've come down with a cold and we're all feeling generally unwell due to lack of sleep.

DP wants to complain to the builders but I don't want any animosity between us and the new family who are moving in as they seem lovely when I've said hello in passing.

So just wondering if I'm being unreasonable for not wanting to complain, or is DP for wanting to complain?

Those are very long hours - you could ask that they don't drill till after 8am at least. At least ask how much longer the work will be going on for - that may give you some peace of mind knowing the end date.

Check with you local council the hours that builders can work. Here it is 8am to 6pm Mon-Fri and 8am to 1pm Sat, no Sundays or Bank Holidays.

I think you have to suck it up, it won't go on forever. Its good they are doing up the house, it means they care about the property.

I do sympathise with the nuisance of the noise, but unwell from lack of sleep? What time do your kids normally sleep til, if being woken at 7 am is making them ill?

specialsubject · 10/09/2013 17:29

it would help you to know how long this will take.

and I've never met builders who work those hours - early start yes, but early finish too.

find out what is going on, this is beyond acceptable.

7am is against the law. 8am is the start time. all councils seem to have this policy. id have a word with the builders.
