Someone I knew from school has posted on their facebook, a video of them driving (what I can gather is a new car) at 140mph down a duel carriageway (only 2 lanes), and was also stupid enough to film it and post it on facebook. I left a less than amused comment and expect to be unfriended shortly.

Shall I share it highlighting the stupidity and hope it goes viral before he deletes it or me...there was no shot of the speedo so useless for the police....

LeoandBoosmum

I would have reported him to the taxi company! Can you imagine him being able to carry passengers who have NO say on how he drives?

quoteunquote · 10/09/2013 09:36

The culture of shit driving has cost me many friends and family , I hold everyone who drive badly responsible for their deaths.

I would tell the police anyway, explain what he put up and when, ask them to keep a careful look out for his antics.

AKAK81 · 10/09/2013 09:48

I've travelled faster than that on 2 lane dual carriageways on many occasions. The questions you need to be asking are:- What time of day was it? What was the weather like? Any other traffic? What was the road surface like? How good was the visibility? The answers to those questions will determine whether it was dangerous or a calculated risk. Still highly illegal though which is why the golden rules are not to do it in your own country and not to post the video footage publicly on the internet.

BinarySolo · 10/09/2013 10:02

Unless you're off road on a race course driving at that speed is dangerous whether it's on a dual carriage way or motorway. There will always be the possibility of other road users including pedestrians or cyclist who are less visible and more vulnerable. That speed allows for very little thinking time and your stopping distance will be greatly increased. Some hazards such as black ice or oily surfaces would not be apparent until it's much too late.

AKAK81 · 10/09/2013 10:17

I think perhaps you need to tell the British police who regularly drive at those speeds quite legally. They're highly trained but the cars are nothing special and the laws of physics still apply. Also worth noting that whilst the police have speed limit exemptions there is no exemption from dangerous driving. Personally I keep my speed within the fixed penalty zone in the UK (unless on track) and keep the real high speed stuff for France and Germany.

allmycats · 10/09/2013 10:24

to AKAK81 - from the wife of a former professional motor cycle racer -

You are very, very stupid to be driving at excessive speeds on public roads any where and at any time - are the lives of French and German people worth less than those of people in this country in your world ??

Two roads that I regularly drive on were closed yesterday due to two separate incidents, both involving fatalities.

It is not worth it.

differentnameforthis · 10/09/2013 10:35

Don't even bother engaging with AKAK81 they don't believe in speed limits & you won't get any where with them.

It isn't worth your time.

AKAK81 · 10/09/2013 10:39

And yet perfectly legal on the deresticted sections in Germany. Also worth mentioning that this would usually be on totally deserted sections of road although perfectly easy to sit at 140 on the autobahn with traffic overtaking you. Here's an interesting fact - did you know that if you have two identical cars one travelling at 80 and one at 140 and they both brake at the same point the 140 car will still be travelling at 115 at the point the other car has stopped.

AKAK81 · 10/09/2013 10:47

I am not comparing myself to anyone, merely giving an example which suggests that high speeds are not always dangerous. And where did I say I don't believe in speed limits? Of course I do - some people are far to stupid to be left to their own devices to judge appropriate speed. Unfortunately its the same stupid people who have accidents due to inappropriate speed whilst travelling at or under the limit - and this happens quite a bit, they assume that because they are travelling below the limit they are safe. This is what causes accidents in spray and fog - people are incapable of moderating their speed relevant to the conditions.

TrueStory · 10/09/2013 10:50

Who needs friends like that. Gosh you're well rid.

And agree with Leo should be more plain police cars Angry

What have trained police drivers legally responding to an incident got to do with anything? Their blue flashing lights and sirens aren't just an amusing diversion for them, they're there specifically to allow them to drive outside of the speed limits whilst alerting other drivers to their presence. Tom, Dick and Harry doing 140+ down a dual carriageway have no such excuse.

I do love the arrogance of people who think they're safe to speed. You can be the best driver in the world. You do NOT know what is round the corner or about to enter the carriageway, you can't defy physics and it's not about your car, it's about all the cars on the road and having a common procedure. The breathtaking arrogance of people who 'can handle their cars' makes me rage. Of course they always talk about other factors causing accidents too. Shifts the focus of course and you don't have to acknowledge your own foolishness.

OP, I'd alert the police anyway. If it's been on FB already, deleting means nothing. It's still there, you just can't see it.

AKAK81 · 10/09/2013 11:48

So MrsWolowitz how good a driver are you? Can you answer yes to a few simple questions? Do you understand the terms understeer and oversteer? Do you understand the differences between how a car will react in those states based on which wheels are driven and where the engine is located? Do you understand advanced road positioning? Do you understand advanced observation? Can you tell me the colour and type of vehicle behind you at any time without looking in a mirror? Do you understand how to read the severity of an approaching bend? Do you understand how a change in road surface will affect the dynamics of the car you are driving? Can you use the heel and toe technique to rev match and enhance the stability entering a corner? Do you own a copy of Roadcraft? Can you give an ongoing and complete commentary of everything you are observing and all your driver inputs? If you can't then its people like you who make me scared for the safety of loved ones on the roads as its people like YOU that kill people. Quite frankly I'll continue to take direction on high speed driving from someone who is qualified to give that direction rather than some random people on the internet. Yes I have had a lot of very advanced training and I have been described as having a natural talent by someone qualified to make that statement but please don't mistake as arrogance - I'm not a perfect driver or even a great driver however I take driving as a skill very seriously and believe that it is something that you never stop improving. I currently have a clean licence and 1 million+ accident free miles under my belt.

BumpAndGrind · 10/09/2013 11:58

Well,

I had a PM from his sister today...no message from him still...

She claims it was just a random video off you tube...I call bullshit. His comments were bragging as if it was him and the guys in the car had local accents.

She jumped on me calling him offensive names as if it was just as bad a speeding.

I'm angry, and amused.

So do I - doesn't mean anything. I've driven terribly in the past.

Revengeofkarma · 10/09/2013 12:24

If you've got a plate number/description report to cops and report to the council taxi authority. Without video they can do very little except yell at him BUT if enough people complain about the same guy, he's got problems.

AKAK1, you just claimed that owning a book made you a better driver.

Justify all you want. But you sound to me like a highly overconfident arrogant twat, whose comeuppance is due. And no sympathy from me when it comes.

Tiredmumno1 · 10/09/2013 13:00

How can police cars be nothing special? When they are modified for that job?

Tiredmumno1 · 10/09/2013 13:02

Oh and driving at them speeds is disgusting and plain stupid.

OP YANBU to do what you have to do.

Tiredmumno1 · 10/09/2013 13:03

That top sentence is worded a tad wrong, just doesn't look right Blush sorry
