How long does cooked chicken last for?

In a very cold fridge?

I seem to remember that cooked meats last a lot longer than raw.

It was cooked fresh on Thursday night, will it be ok?

I've always thought it was 2 days (3 absolute max) for cooked meat so I wouldn't TBH. Sorry, but I had food poisoning from takeaway a few weeks ago so am very much on the side of not worth the risk until the horror fades!

TeaLadyExtraordinaire · 09/09/2013 11:28

Yes, it should be absolutely fine. It's cooked, it's cold and bacteria aren't crawling all over it like they would on raw meat.

GobblersKnob · 09/09/2013 11:29

I always thought 3 days, but I know people who think a week is fine and never have any problems.

MisselthwaiteManor · 09/09/2013 11:32

I cook in bulk on a Sunday and DH takes it for lunch all week, usually has chicken or other meat in it. He's still alive.

I always throw mine away after 24 hours but will be keeping it a bit longer after reading these replies.

Dancergirl · 09/09/2013 11:52

I was thinking 3 days....so today would only be an extra day... shall I risk it?

I wouldn't eat it left that long but maybe it is ok. Usually I make a curry sauce the day it is cooked and put it in the freezer to save waste.

sparkle12mar08 · 09/09/2013 12:40

Meh, I'd eat it without a second thought. We often do a roast on Sunday and then use the leftovers on Tuesday and Friday.

usualsuspect · 09/09/2013 12:43

I would use it within 3 days.

But I wouldn't be that bothered about an extra day.

NoComet · 09/09/2013 12:46

5 days easily if it's going to be turned into curry and seriously heated through, (or eaten cold by me).

3 days if feeding it cold to visitors. Not that any of us have ever suffered any ill effects from DFs cold turkey on New years day (Which I'm sure is from Christmas/boxing day)

NoComet · 09/09/2013 12:48

I ate cold pork and pickle sandwiches Monday to Thursday at school for years (Monday to Friday if it was a big joint). No ill effects.

nextphase · 09/09/2013 12:49

I'd eat that in sometihng being heated up properly e.g curry or risotto.
Not sure about cold.

Crowler · 09/09/2013 12:50

According to a chef friend, chicken is OK for three days unless it's in a watery sauce/soup, in which case it's more like a day.

Tee2072 · 09/09/2013 13:00

4 or 5 days in this house.

Last week I made a chicken on Sunday. We had it in a delicious pie on Thursday. So 4 days.

Thank you MrsBW - that is a very useful site!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 09/09/2013 13:09

You can put it in a curry, which will reheat it and kill off germs.

MrsBW · 09/09/2013 13:10

You're welcome. It's brilliant.

Saved me £££

I always check it when in doubt.

72 hours, any longer and it may be fine but you are taking a gamble.
