To think I've had a bit of a light bulb moment re weight loss?!

So, I was sitting on the sofa cuddling my mug of coffee and thinking about an upcoming night out. I am on a never ending quest to lose weight (I have two stone to lose) and was wondering what healthy choices to make, whether to offer to drive, not go at all etc (all this despite the fact that over the last few days I have munched choccy bars, crisps, wine, takeaway, through the ordinary course of the day...) - ironic eh?

Then a thought popped into my head, like a little voice saying 'its what you do the rest of the time that counts'. Meaning, go out, order whatever you like of the menu - what you actually want - have a couple of drinks and really enjoy the moment. BUT in every day life, rein it in. Cut out the crap, make sure alcohol is only for weekends, cook healthily, don't snack due to boredom/ stress....

In other words I had been doing it the wrong way round, mindlessly eating what I wanted every day (with a mindset of 'I'll start being good tomorrow) and worrying about the calorie content of what I would consume on a special night out.

So my new strategy : nights out and/or special occasions (they dont happen that often) are to be enjoyed without a second thought to (calories, points, syns, blah blah) BUT it is what I do the rest of the time that counts.

Just needed to get that of my chest, AIBU to think that it is not totally bonkers?

It sounds sensible to me. I'm on steriods again at the moment so have had serious weight gain. When I come off, I diet by eating sensibly Monday to Friday and having what I fancy at the weekend. I don't go mad, just a glass of wine and maybe a nice pudding after Sunday Lunch. It usually works.

SPBisResisting · 08/09/2013 10:03

No, not at all. However, a common pitfall I've found when you wake up bloated, hungover and feeling ashamed of yourself (diet wise) is to write that day off too. And then the next and the next....
A trap I am still struggling to escape. So just beware.
But I agree. When I can, if I take care all week, a weekend day of eating what I want, when I want, doesn't even register on the scales

No light bulb moment is bonkers if you think it will work for you!!

Enjoy your nights out!

One tip I had in the past is do your shopping online, it makes it much, much less likely that you will buy naughty treats seeing as that is usually done whilst wandering last them in the aisles Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 08/09/2013 10:05

Wandering past them, I mean.

Rufus43 · 08/09/2013 10:39

Good idea, every once in a while I think if I just stopped eating crap all the time then the odd treats wouldn't matter...then I think sod it and eat some more crap!

No idea how I stop doing this!

gingerbreadshoes · 08/09/2013 10:58

I've just started to do this and it is much easier than it sounds.

I am finding it easy to eat healthy foods during the week when there is no need to go overboard. I have had a couple of meals out and have ordered whatever I fancy.

I think that this is what 'normal' people do with regards to eating unlike myself who could easily get through a bar or two of chocolate a day and not think anything of it Blush

RandallPinkFloyd · 08/09/2013 11:02

That's exactly the mindset I've used and it's lost me over 5 stone since January.

I'm an LP with only XDH, who works most Friday and saturday nights, to babysit, so to say I don't get out often is an understatement! If being on a diet meant I had to deprive myself on those occasions I just wouldn't stick to it.

I'm sure my way wouldn't work for everyone (and I am by no means an expert!) but I've even using MFP to calorie count but looking at my goal as a weekly one rather than strictly a daily one.

I stuck to it most days but if I was going to be having a high cal day I'd just make sure I was extra careful on the other days to compensate. As long as my total weekly amount came in under my total weekly limit I was happy.

I lost every single week for 8 months.

Give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? I personally don't there is any right or wrong way to do it. As long as it's healthy, sustainable, and it works then do whatever is right for you.

Good luck Smile

That's absolutely right. When we do out, I go bonkers... beer, wine, pasta, dessert, cheese & biscuits, Baileys... but the rest of the time I go to the gym 4 times a week and don't eat carbs. The weight is falling off me at the moment. Not a brag, sorry, just some encouragement for you.

jimijack · 08/09/2013 11:11

MFP is fantastic.
I'm 20Lbs lighter here too by doing what you describe as your lightbulb moment and counting via MFP.
It works! Go for it.

CHJR · 08/09/2013 19:32

Good tip! for one thing then I won't feel so deprived, I'll know I can still have fun (and be fun for the people around me) sometimes. Isn't this like a real-world variant of the 5:20 diet?

VitoCorleone · 08/09/2013 19:38

Agree that MFP is great, gives you a chance to really look back at what you've eaten.

Is anyone wants to add me on there my name is KayleighRebecca25 - always good to have people to motivate you and see what others eat :)

LaurieFairyCake · 08/09/2013 19:41

That's what I do with 5:2. The vast majority of the time I get to really enjoy my life and 2 days I have to really rein it in.

What's not to like about 5 days of possible socialising Grin ?
