who usually overstay their welcome, when is a good time for them to go home?

I just told pil that after lunch at about 2.30pm that dh is taking dd and ds2 to a party and that would be a good time for them to go too.

Otherwise they'll just stay and stay until late and we have all got stuff to do.

They've been here two nights.

Well, it can be OK depending on whether you phrased it politely or were blunt and rude.

What Soup said, although if you are talking about people coming to stay, as you clearly are, then it is usually best to manage expectations before they come rather than when they are sitting there. "Yes, you can come this weekend, but it will have to only be until X as we have other stuff going on. It will be lovely to see you - don't bother bringing towels, we've plenty" or whatever.
