In asking me to divert my phone line to my own personal mobile when I'm working from home?

If divert as in they can only get hold of you when calling your work number then yes they are. If they want to give out your mobile number then no they're not.

Morgause · 06/09/2013 12:58

I'd say so.

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 06/09/2013 12:59

Subject to it only being done during working hours.

MaxPepsi · 06/09/2013 13:01

I'd say so yes.

You are working, so you presumably need to take work calls.

TeeBee · 06/09/2013 13:01

Sounds reasonable to me.

TippiShagpile · 06/09/2013 13:01

They want you to divert your work phone to your mobile when you're working from home?

Entirely reasonable IMHO. How else could you deal with work calls?

LuisSuarezTeeth · 06/09/2013 13:02

Yes as l

CMOTDibbler · 06/09/2013 13:03

If you don't have a work mobile, then yes, how else will people contact you?

LuisSuarezTeeth · 06/09/2013 13:03

Sorry. As long as you are not paying for the divert.

Trapper · 06/09/2013 13:10

How are you expected to call people back?

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa · 06/09/2013 13:14

Thanks all

That's helpful.

There's lots of shit going on here and I couldn't decide if I was letting my general pissed offness cloud my judgement. Glad I asked :)

Yeah I think they are being reasonable. I can see its irritating but you are supposed to be working, right?

2beornot · 06/09/2013 13:34

Reasonable but it does mean that you can't switch off from work. Can't they give you a v cheap mobile instead?

2beornot · 06/09/2013 13:36

Unless I've misunderstood and you can undivert from home once you've finished. Then I see no problem at all

RattersReward · 06/09/2013 13:36

I'm going to go against the grain here because I don't think they are being reasonable. They should provide you with a mobile phone for business purposes. Are the phone calls only ever incoming? Do your employers expect you to make business phone calls from your personal mobile?

I divert the calls from my work mobile to my personal one. That way I can give out my work number but only need to carry one phone around.
I'd say it was reasonable as long as you switch off the divert when your aren't at work.

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 06/09/2013 13:44

Yes, this is quite normal isn't it? That's why companies use telephone software that can point your line at any phone. When I work from home I log in and divert my phone line to my home phone or mobile to receive work calls.

EeyoreIsh · 06/09/2013 13:44

perfectly reasonable. I have to do this when I work from home.

sparechange · 06/09/2013 13:48

Yes, I think that is reasonable. Are you working from home because you want to, or because they want you to?
If it is the latter, I would see the case for asking for a work mobile, but expect a lot more work calls in the evenings and at weekends if you have one

Trills · 06/09/2013 13:54

As long as:
1 - You can turn off the diversion once work time is over
2 - You don't have to pay to call people

then yes they are being reasonable.

It's the equivalent of asking "are they being unreasonable to ask me to have a phone on my desk so that people can call me during office hours?"

Pigsmummy · 06/09/2013 13:57

As a home worker I have a business line and a business mobile, I turn those off at weekend to reclaim my space as mine. If you are working from home on an adhoc basis then I think that it's reasonable to divert to mobile as you are doing however if it's a longer term situation ask your firm to set you up as a home worker. I would query about hoe to return calls as your personal mobile number will become available if you are expected to use that?

Humuhumunukunukuapuaa · 06/09/2013 14:01

In principle I'm not opposed to it, but yes I do have to make calls, the process for reclaiming for these is so laborious I don't often bother.

I do feel they could provide me with a basic mobile. And I do sort of think that I shouldn't have to rely on my own equipment to be contactable.

But it's not a huge biggie in the scheme if things and I'm willing to go along with it for an easy life

Not really trills. It's the equivalent of asking me to provide a telephone to be on my desk
