In hospital. Hca brought me tea then proceeded to pick uup my newspaper and flick.through it. She said she wanted to see what it said about assylum seekers. Then said yes yes thats what I think they should all be sent home. The lot of them.

I just ignored her. I feel like shit and don't have the energy for an argument. I feel guilty now I didn't say anything.

Well I don't really either tbh! I guess I can't control what she thinks but surely you can't say things like that when you are in a professional role

You aren't well and didn't have the energy to argue with this idiot. You didn't do anything wrong.

I was really proud of DH and DS1 and DS2 who all went for their hair cut recently. The barber was talking about how there are too many 'foreigners' in the UK. On their walk home they all decided to never go back to him again. DS2 (7) said he wanted to tell the barber how he has lots of friends who were born in India.

Get well soon btw x

My favourite 'send 'em back' ranter is Greek Cypriot Confused. I've known him for 20 years and I've never plucked up the courage to point that out.

I really don't understand why people say contentious stuff and expect you to agree. Doesn't it occur to them that you might not?

ChestyNut · 06/09/2013 14:07
Shock

That's awful!
Yes she is entitled to an opinion but not to express it when she is in uniform representing the trust.

HCP should be non judgemental.

I'd mention it on way out, very unprofessional.

Thanks as cant find the grape emoticon.

Hope you feel better soon giraffes

TrueStory · 06/09/2013 16:02

Why shouldn't she speak her mind? No-one else is listening to her (politicians).

Roshbegosh · 06/09/2013 16:06

She shouldn't say this but while I am not affected by immigration we all know the people working on the minimum wage, like HCAs, are affected, so I would just leave it.

limitedperiodonly · 06/09/2013 16:59

That's true roshbegosh

Misspixietrix · 06/09/2013 18:45

I hate HCA's one made my Dd spend another Night in Hospital when she kept fucking ignoring me when I told her she was getting worse. Felt so much of a shit badgering half the ward and arguing with a consultant but If they had listened in the first place and gave her a neb in the morning we would have been home by teatime! ~

Mabelface · 06/09/2013 18:49

Whilst the HCA is in her workplace, she is not allowed to spout racist views and has to abide by non discrimination rules. She is out of order. Oh, and her job won't be affected by asylum seekers, seeing as they are not actually allowed to work.

sameoldIggi · 06/09/2013 19:00

The right to seek asylum is part of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Unless she thinks Britain should leave the UN, it is not something over which we have a choice.
And totally out of place in her workplace. I'd be offended that she thought I wouldn't be offended, iyswim!

Roshbegosh · 06/09/2013 19:03

misspixie so you hate all of them, that's discriminating and stereotyping so why is that ok?
madlizzy that may be the case initially though in the end there is competition for resources and I am not excusing the HCA but I think if I were cleaning shit on the minimum wage I would be angry with everyone.

madlizzy I've come to agree withrosh.

The woman wasn't spouting racist views. Xenophobic ones, but I can see her point.

I bet she's competing for scarce resources at the bottom of the heap, which drives her resentment.

It would better be directed at the people who are really screwing everyone, like the people who take advantage of depressed wages, no matter where the person comes from.

But really, what can you do?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 06/09/2013 19:31

I think her comment is unprofessional and as hcp we are meant to be non-judgemental (regardless of what we're actually thinking).

Misspixietrix · 06/09/2013 19:42

Rosh I didnt say it was. Thats just one example. Im allowed to form my own opinion. After all im not spouting mine whilst in NHS Uniform like the OPs HCA person Is. If youve dealt with HC Professionals as much as I have you would understand where Im coming from.

limitedperiodonly · 06/09/2013 19:44

I have a joke that if I have to use the mimsy word 'unprofessional' I should get aggravated damages, because it embarrasses me.

I used it on Wednesday morning. It was true, but it made me wince.

The person I complained about was earning a great deal more than I guess the woman in the OP was.

Interestingly, he was also an migrant; English to the US, complaining about how England wasn't England any more.

I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make, except that people at the bottom of the pile sometimes lash out at the wrong targets and always fruitlessly, and sometimes I don't blame them.

Was a bit Confused then MrsDeVere. Glad in RTFT qgain! Grin

limitedperiodonly · 06/09/2013 20:10

mrsdevere I assume your reference to 'bottom of the heap' refers to me. Apologies if it doesn't.

You might have seen my previous posts on this thread.

I don't think anyone is right to be racist or xenophobic. I mentioned my confusion and disgust at a Greek Cypriot immigrant railing against immigrants from other countries.

But I also resent people at the top of the heap, of whatever colour or creed, shitting on the economically-disadvantaged. I'm increasingly counting myself amongst them.

That's what's happening today and is spreading hatred between people who are indeed the bottom of the heap wherever they come from.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 06/09/2013 20:15

Bottom of the heap? Wtf? HCAs do a valued job. Certainly do on the ward I work on anyway.

ilovesooty · 06/09/2013 20:18

To be honest if someone expressed that view to me while they were in a work setting I'd report them in a heartbeat (health permitting of course).

I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to do her job who either don't hold xenophobic views or at least have the decency to keep them to themselves at work.

Misspixietrix · 06/09/2013 20:20

Anyway OP how are you this evening? Have you planned your escape yet? Wink
