To expect pupils to do work in the first week back?

Ds has just gone into year 6.

So far this week, they've had free time every morning and done topic work in the afternoon.
To clarify, I'm a teacher so I understand easing them in, settling them down, working on routines, groupings and behaviour.
But aibu to expect them to do maths and English, even if it's revision of things taught last year to see what they've remembered and not have free time in the first week back?

Yanbu

I teach year 6 and we went straight in with work on the first day.

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 05/09/2013 17:53

Yanbu.

I've had to plan and teach proper lessons to yrs7-13, so I wouldn't be happy with my children being apparently unplanned for. Especially in year 6 - it's not like they are KS1, and they will get a massive shock this time next year I'm guessing.......

That's my concern, they're year 6 and should be preparing for key stage 3 this year. There are parents' meetings in 2 weeks to discuss the national test results (which should have gone out in July, I thought!) so I will definitely raise my concerns then.

I teach secondary and this week have had all my classes doing extended writing so I can assess their skill level. Most have actively enjoyed the challenge.

Yanbu - I have had y7 doing bits of writing so I can roughly gauge their level, with a bit of 'getting to know you' chat in the first lesson, everyone else has been straight in

Moetlovermuvver · 05/09/2013 22:51

YANBU

I teach Year 4 and we've done a few assessments but they've had their nose to the grindstone since lesson 2 (first lesson was choosing a class name and setting class rules)!

Yanbu
Ds (yr 7) had one 'form period' then straight in and even got homework today.

TheFuzz · 06/09/2013 14:44

My kids are straight into teaching, and a big homework load !

Shanghaidiva · 06/09/2013 14:49

DD is 7 (year 3) and had a relaxing first day - new teacher and a couple of new kids in the class.
Day 2 business as usual.
DS in year 9 - business as usual from day one with homework set.

MadeOfStarDust · 06/09/2013 14:51

I have a Y7 and Y8 - both had a special welcome assembly, then straight into lessons and 40 min homework each night.

mrspaddy · 06/09/2013 14:51

Yanbu.. Especially with important exams.. I am a teacher and dive straight in.. It is good to set expectations too.

OctopusWrangler · 06/09/2013 17:16

Our lot went straight into work, but they've had no homework other than reading books as yet because they dish it out on a Monday apparently. Even my year 2 has had a reading book, a homework sheet and three reasonably full days.

ziggiestardust · 06/09/2013 17:47

YANBU, but I remember doing the same thing when I was in school. Maybe not the free time, but we never seemed to do an awful lot. Just a lot of getting new books, backing them with sticky paper and getting organised and stuff like that.

ChasingSquirrels · 06/09/2013 17:49

My y6 ds said yesterday that they hadn't really done anything yet (certainly no maths) as they had been filling in their names on books and stuff.
I have to say I took it with a pinch of salt.

pointythings · 06/09/2013 19:12

YANBU - mine went back yesterday (yr6 and yr8) and they have both gone straight in. DD1 has two good-sized pieces of homework for the weekend.
