... in thinking the M & S 'Leading Ladies' ad campaign won't shift their clothes

Been looking at the photos again. Dark, dreary and, to be honest, frumpy clothes and as for the 'Leading Ladies', would any of them be seen dead in M & S 'fashion'? I know Annie Lebonwitz, arguably one of the best photographers in the world, took the pictures, but really ... whose bright idea was it to have this campaign? Bring back Twiggy!

Its beyond ridiculous.

Heres a tip M and S - Spend more time and effort actually designing and selling good clothes than on fancy clever ad campaigns and your fortunes just might improve again.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 05/09/2013 12:14

YANBU. the clothing is awful....

Beeyump · 05/09/2013 12:15

Oh, but I love the red haired woman dramatically holding the sheep!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 05/09/2013 12:15

I mean...how frumpy!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 05/09/2013 12:16

why?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 05/09/2013 12:17

Beey dramatic sheep holding aside...the clothing isn't reflecting that! Grin

Nah, agreed about the clothes I guess. They have a nice pale pink winter coat though! They do nice winter coats in general.

I have an M&S budgetcard waiting to be 'activated' (as the old one has now expired) and as I have yet to find anything which I would want to buy/wear and spend good money on, I have not yet used it - it's been sitting in my purse for the past three months too Hmm.

That really sums up the demise of stylish M&S for me - I used to find it difficult to resist using my card and now I can't find anything I would wish to buy!

TheSkiingGardener · 05/09/2013 13:22

Leading bloody ladies? Patronising as fuck in frumptastic clothes.

101handbags · 05/09/2013 15:53

The new season clothes that I've seen are truly terrible. I was in the City Road store in London yesterday lunchtime - it's all daytime clothes with leopard print, snake print, lace and sequins, some leopard print fur coats even Bet Lynch would reject and garish patterns and colours everywhere. Even the shoes are snakeprint and leopard print. Limited Collection in particular is absolutely awful. There was a jumper in the same pattern as my picnic blanket. M & S have truly lost their way with the women's clothes. PS I can't comment on the mumsnet favourite Per Una as it's no longer stocked in City Road, but I note that Hilary Alexander is now in charge of that range... unbelievably.

Beeyump · 05/09/2013 15:56

Is Per Una really a Mumsnet favourite?? Or was that a joke.

101handbags · 05/09/2013 15:58

Er, no, that was a joke. I do enjoy the 'look at what Per Una are trying to flog now' threads though.

I have a £100 M&S gift voucher which I have been struggling to spend for MONTHS. I suppose eventually I will buy a plain cashmere cardi or something but even that feels like a waste. There are far nicer (and cheaper) cashmere things elsewhere. If anyone can find me something nice to spend it on that I might really like, go ahead! Think of it as a challenge...

Beeyump · 05/09/2013 16:02

Ahh, ok! Relief for dense me Smile

enderwoman · 05/09/2013 16:10

I'd be spending the gift card on school uniform, food and looking at their homeware which is over priced but fine in terms of quality.

HarumScarum · 05/09/2013 16:55

Yes, school uniform crossed my mind but it doesn't fit DD very well so I didn't do that in the end. Will have a look at the homeware as perhaps some new towels or nice sheets might be a good treat. I don't think £100 would go far in the food section, though they do have good wine so maybe that's the way to go! Thanks for the ideas. I suppose I was just sort of hoping to spend it on MEEEEE rather than family stuff...

cushtie335 · 05/09/2013 17:02

Oh God, those links are horrific. I lived in M&S in my late 20s, spent a fortune in there. Now everything looks like they couldn't get rid of it in Happit.

It won't because they won't actually stock it in the majority of their stores. We just get the crappy stuff. I am sick of seeing something on their posters, in our store, and being told they don't stock it Angry. So I give up.

Love Grace Coddington though.

oldgrandmama · 05/09/2013 17:47

Apparantly that pink coat has a huge waiting list now. Don't get me wrong, I used to love M & S back in ... oh, the eighties. Though I lived abroad, mainly in France, when I visited the UK I always stocked up in M & S clothes. They were well made, not overpriced, and there was a lot of really stylish and classic stuff. I once met a buyer for M & S (lingerie). She told me that the 'committee' that decided what was going into the store was comprised middle aged and elderly men. Does this still apply?

I like that jumper and even the top if it didn't have that bow thing at the side.

I must be a frump Shock
