PFB is 20 months and had lovely skin until she got Chicken Pox in May, since then her ankles, wrists and elbows are just a mess :(

She has been to the walk-in centre and the GP and has various vaseline type creams, a steroid (but we can only use that sparingly) and the GP gave her E45 (which did nothing).

Tonight she has been trying to get to sleep but scratching and saying "ankles, elbows, sore, more cream, a little bit". I feel really sorry for her but am also losing my mind over the scratching too and the lack of GP help. He just said it's eczema and she will grow out of it.

I honestly cannot believe there is not SOMETHING out there that actually works, surely she (and I) don't have to put up with this until God knows when?

If DC2 wasn't due in December I would seriously be on the wine :(

my friends mum always put coconut oil on her. not sure if its right but it worked for her

waltzingmathilda · 04/09/2013 21:41

Euerex

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 04/09/2013 21:42

Aveeno works for DS. And Oilatum in bath. E45 was rubbish for him.

nickelbabe · 04/09/2013 21:43

yse sodium bicarb in the bath water too. it's supposed to soothe it.

heavenstobetsy · 04/09/2013 21:44

Doublebase, buy it over the counter in boots. Slightly odd textured creamy gel but hydrates better than anything else we've used

nickelbabe · 04/09/2013 21:44

no, do not use eurax on a 20month old!

chickensaladagain · 04/09/2013 21:44

It really is a case of trial and error and what is a miracle cure for one will make no difference for someone else

Dermol lotion works for dd but we tried many others before that

BabyStone · 04/09/2013 21:44

Aveeno is meant to be good, although it made DS' skin worse. We were prescribed Hydrocortisone cream 0.1% then Double based gel after (if you haven't already tried these)

harderthanitlooks · 04/09/2013 21:44

Aveeno cream worked for my DD unfortunatly the gprs won't prescribe it but its always on offer in boots. It worked within 24 hrs for us.

Eilidhbelle · 04/09/2013 21:45

Doublebase? Ask your GP for a prescription, it's gel based so its really soothing. I use it for eczema, you can put it on unlimited times throughout the day.

matilda101 · 04/09/2013 21:45

We use oilatum in the bath (only bath once a week tho cos it makes the excma worse) and diprobase cream twice a day which seams ok. If it flares up badly I do give dd some antihistamine before bed so she doesn't scratch at night.

trippleM · 04/09/2013 21:45

Another vote for Aveeno. Lovely, and you may be able to get it on prescription.

orangeandemons · 04/09/2013 21:45

Eurex. Also use steroid until itching clears, then use an e45 type moisturiser. Use it whilst the eczema is inflamed too, inbetween steroid applications. No soap in bath.

I once had eczema on my neck on a long car journey. Kept slapping oilatum cream on, as nothing else to do. It had gone by the time we reached our destination and it had been really bad.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 04/09/2013 21:45

Doublebase and then Hydromol in the bath works for ds.

nickelbabe · 04/09/2013 21:45

and it really is just a case of trial and error. we've been battling eczema since dd was 4mo and we're now on epaderm. which is like trex Grin

Imsosorryalan · 04/09/2013 21:45

You need an emollient cream. I've had eczema for 20+ years. Try epiderm, doublebase or diprobase. On prescription from dr.

Doublebase is oilier and therefore may keep the itch away longer. Be generous with application, you may need to apply 2 or even 3 times a day to start with.

I've also worked out that the steroid cream treates it and the emollients manage it so you may need a prolonged use of steroid cream initially to treat flare ups over a week or so then manage it day to day with a emollient.
Good luck, that itch is awful.

MsTimTam · 04/09/2013 21:45

It's awful isn't it, both my dds have had eczema on and off.

My GP has been great (she suffers from it herself) and we manage it with a combination of a steroid cream and Aveeno all the time. The Aveeno works a treat and I think there is one you can out in the bath.

The good news is that dd1 (6) does seem to have mostly grown out of it and dd2 (3) gets it far less often than she used to.

Willitberaaaaspberry · 04/09/2013 21:46

I second the coconut oil suggestion. Whenever dd gets a touch of eczema we always put a dab of it on her or 'melt' some in her bath water. She's always very slippery after a coconut oil bath grin

I'd just try a patch test first to make sure your dd is ok with it too.

PeazlyPops · 04/09/2013 21:46

Aveeno or doublebase, both gentle and soothing.

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 04/09/2013 21:46

sudocrem is amazing

ThermoLobster · 04/09/2013 21:47

I agree with trial and error. I have terribly itchy skin and have tried all sorts. When very bad I have had to resort to steroids but otherwise Waitrose Bottom Butter generally keeps it under control, and sometimes Sudacrem if it is very sore.

RedPencils · 04/09/2013 21:47

Aveeno is amazing. And you can get it on prescription.

Go see a different GP, 'she'll grow out of it' is utterly crap.

nickelbabe · 04/09/2013 21:48

please people stop suggesting eurax!
you are not supposed to use it on young children!
it says so on the instructions.

Mindthetortoise · 04/09/2013 21:48

Poor thing. Try a-derma; not the cheapest but it is absolutely brilliant. www.amazon.co.uk/A-Derma-Epitheliale-Repairing-Cream-40ml/dp/B000RXZ9NS/ref=sr_1_23?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1378327298&sr=1-23&keywords=a-derma+cream is the one for repairing angry/broken skin, and www.amazon.co.uk/A-Derma-Exomega-Emollient-Cream-Omega/dp/B000Q37XLU/ref=sr_1_1?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1378327298&sr=1-1&keywords=a-derma+cream is great for dry skin in general.
Had the same problem with one of my kids, and these products worked!
