Hi, DH earns just over £50k so should I stop getting my child benefit? What are the pros for continuing to get it and then him doing a self assessment every year and then paying it all back? He's not self employed so doesn't do one now, I'm a SAHM. Just can't work it out, sorry! Thanks

ask in one of the finance topics.

You don't have to pay it all back if you earn just over £50000. Roughly speaking you lose 10% of it for everything over 50k, so you do pay it all back by the time your DP earns £60k

Alwaysneedtomowthelawn · 04/09/2013 12:08

Also there is a benefit about claiming it in terms of NI contributions, or pension contributions or something - can't remember the details though!

Squitten · 04/09/2013 12:10

From what I have read (here: www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/start/claiming/protect-pension.htm) claiming child benefit as a SAHM is important to protect your State Pension because you are not earning any money. This is why we opted for me to keep claiming it and DH to pay it back. He has to do self-assessment anyway though.

If you continue to claim the child benefit you receive a credit towards pensions etc which is worth it for a sahm. I claim then do self assessment for that one reason only. Also if your dh earns just over £50k then you will not lose cb in full, only part will need repaying via tax

Thanks everyone, that is really useful and apologies for not posting in the finance topic, didn't realise there was one! Right, I'll carry on claiming and he'll have to do a self assessment form, didn't realise it was important to claim child benefit for a state pension, thank you

It is very important for your pension

TarkaTheOtter · 04/09/2013 12:55

You don't actually need to collect child benefit for state pension credits. It is very clear on the form that you can decline being paid child benefit and still get pension credits. It's the act of filling in the form (to say you have a child) which gives you the pension credits not actually receiving child benefit.
There is lots of misinformation on this.

Mamf74 · 04/09/2013 13:00

We stopped Child Benefit online, as soon as you do it a note comes up confirming that, although the money has stopped, you will still accrue pension credit. I think they also confirm this in writing.

Pigsmummy · 04/09/2013 13:47

I claimed it whilst on maternity leave but now I have (just) returned to work I will be earning over £50k and didn't know how to stop it.

My concern is that I currently don't complete a return and if I continue to claim CB I will need to complete one from now for ever more! just opt out if you don't need it!

Glad to have found this thread. Dh earns £52k and I earn hardly anything. I have been receiving child benefit and would like to continue to receive the money. I have just seen here that a form needs to be returned by 8th oct by dh?? I am very confused!!
