To be bloody annoyed at my neighbours

Every week they have the communal bin filled well (bins collected on Fri, full by Tuesday) before bin day. That's 3-4 large bags between the 2 other flats. Downstairs neighbour is the worst - other tenant tends to just chuck all his rubbish out once every few weeks as he works away. Can't leave bin bags beside bin unless you want the whole street to see your dirty nappies /sanitary products / mouldy leftovers as the gulls will be straight at the bag. Seagull proof bags being piloted but we won't get ours until at least Nov.

My rubbish is never mire

They drive DIRECTLY past the tip on the way to work. The tip is a drive thru, tip black bags in skip, drive out job. I can't drive (dyspraxic, I WOULD crash). 3rd Friday running I will be standing at window waiting for bin men on my day off, or begging my mum for a lift. Angry

Never more than 1 medium bag*!

Yes IABU but I do think they should not use all the bin space!

Could you leave your rubbish inside until just after the bins have been collected then put it straight in? Surely an extra few hours won't hurt, then you'll be ahead Wink

slapandpickle · 03/09/2013 08:46

Hah that's a fab idea! The smell worries me but I always double bag so would be ok I think! Cheers!

You're welcome!

FredFlintstonesSister · 03/09/2013 08:51

If you're worried about the smell, we have a metal ashcan with a lid which seems to seal off unpleasant odours. Put in in something like that while you wait.

Isildur · 03/09/2013 08:51

Can you not just ask whoever organises the communal bin for extra provision to be made?

They might supply one of those big wheelie-type bins that shops use. Our local council waste service did that when some houses were converted into flats/bedsits.

diddl · 03/09/2013 09:18

I can see it's annoying, but you can't really blame neighbours for putting rubbish in as & when they need!

Sounds as if more bins need supplying.

Souredstones · 03/09/2013 09:27

Ring the council and request another bin. I've always done that when living in flats and never had a problem. Do it under the guise of wanting recycling bins Wink

DropYourSword · 03/09/2013 09:33

I can understand your frustration but at the same time I'm not sure what else you expect your neighbors to do with their rubbish?

slapandpickle · 03/09/2013 09:44

I know iabu and will just get on with it. it just peeves me as I work rest of the week and do all my cooking the night before bin day so it gets on my nerves but I think yoinking the bin space on Friday morning is an excellent idea! My dp is lucky enough to have a whole wheelie bin to himself as he has a front patio. maybe I should hand him a bag as he leaves mine if they beat me to it Grin Tbf it was ok by me till a few weeks ago when gull season really kicked in and they started going after everything.

they never recycle just chuck it all in bin. Recycling here is amazing as well and takes everything except glass and some plastics, 3/4 of my rubbish goes to recycling. The bin space is built into front wall and only big enough for 1 plastic "ashcan" which would actually be enough with weekly collection surely? Only 2 of them (couple in their 40s + dog - maybe 2 1/2 then) plus my small bag and the other blokes monthly clear out which is not a lot either as he is away so much. How do they produce so much rubbish :O

How weird they don't recycle glass!

diddl · 03/09/2013 09:48

Oh, if they are taking a lot of space due to not recycling-that's annoying/selfish imo.

What do you do with glass?

slapandpickle · 03/09/2013 09:50

Ps I am sure I have read on here about ways to reduce waste. Mine is all peelings as I cook giant veggie meals to last me all week- can anyone tell me what's good/not good for stock so I can make my own and cut down even more? :) recipes welcome, I usually use potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions, parsnips in cooking. Don't usually peel potatoes but will cut out eyes and manky bits.

Also any ideas for getting rid of banana skins, I saw a gull rip next doors bin bag open last week and eat one whole like a snake. Vom.

Glass recycling is at supermarket 1/2 mile away, 5-10 min walk downhill and with huge car park, or at pub in town 1/2 mile away, again downhill, or at tip 2 miles away. I use loads of glass bottles etc and have only needed to go once a month for the last 2 years with what I could comfortably carry. Not taking glass is standard in the county I think.

Oh and both recycling and rubbish are weekly!!

diddl · 03/09/2013 10:04

We still have to take glass to recycling bins ourselves.

I'd like my own glass bin!
