What with all the serious news that could come first on the 6 o'clock news, BBC starts with a story about some footballer who has been sold to a foreign club for a lot of money.

Who is running the editorial department? Teenage boys??

Do you not know who Gareth Bale is! Shock and how much he was sold for?

In this time of uncertainty, death and depressing news I welcome the fact that a nice young lad [who nearly was given the push by his first big club] with a gift such as his, has achieved what he has done.

You go Gareth!

I hear it's big news Tabby but means nothing to me, I have 2 DSs that are football mad but don't know who he is.. It should be at the end of the news in the sports bit. Angry

Tabby1963 · 02/09/2013 18:33

Well, YouStay I now definitely know all about this chap, whether I want to or not, because it was all over Breakfast News too ;).

I agree, Sparklingbrook, this news should be at the end, in the Sports Section (like in newspapers, the bit I never read lol.

I did wonder who the BBC vet was... :)

Although it may not be earth shattering news, it seems to (or almost) be a record breaking figure.

Not all main news have to be politics or economy.
And it is of interest to a lot of people.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 02/09/2013 18:52

Tabby I was only half joking Wink.

I see where you're coming from with regard to it not being important or worthy news, it is a sport and a man's sporting worth, not affecting how the world turns and all that.

It is news though and important in the world of football, it is the nation's most popular sport after all,

fluffyraggies · 02/09/2013 18:54

I'm with the OP here.

I thought the same thing when watching Breakfast News this morning. It was the second headline. Before Syria.

I think too much air time is wasted on normal football coverage on the news in the sports section at the best of times. Today was just silly.

Headline news? Nope.

Squillions of quid has been spent on a bloke who's good at kicking a ball round a field. Big deal.

Nancy66 · 02/09/2013 18:55

Maybe it was the biggest 'new' story. Have there been any major developments in Syria in the past 12 hours?
