We live somewhere quite rural so there are lots of things like sheep, tractors etc to look at when we go on our morning walk but my 20mo ds only gets excited about seeing dustbins! He points and shouts whenever he sees them and I don't know what to do to discourage this weird obsession. Would you even see it as a problem?

Haha! Grin

When my 14yr old DS was about 2yrs old, he was obsessed with bin bags for some reason?

He'd skip around the house/park/playground singing 'Bin bags...bin bags...biiiiiiiiiiin baaaaaags!'

Confused
shellbot · 02/09/2013 11:06

Ah that's sweet. I wouldn't worry as he'll probably move onto something else.

My youngest used to shout knickers whenever we went into a clothes shop so it could be worse!

jungletoes · 02/09/2013 11:07

Oh that's funny!

sixlostmonkeys · 02/09/2013 11:09

hehe my ds used to get very excited about bin collection day. he would stand at the window early in the morning waiting for the truck to come down the street. It reached a point where the truck driver etc would wave up to him :)

This was DS's Best Toy Ever for several years. It isn't weird at all, many small children are fascinated by bin lorries!

Weirdly I just popped to the shop and on my arrival home, there is a bin outside my house and a toddler boy had stopped to point it out to his mum!

It wasent you was it?! Grin

Faerieinatoadstool · 02/09/2013 11:47

I wouldn't mind if it was bin lorries, at least they do something! He seems to think bins are some sort of exciting treasure trove, full of brilliant things to play with and eat. Knickers

My DD was fascinated by sofa adverts on the tv...kids are strange

Faerieinatoadstool · 02/09/2013 11:54

Ahh! Knickers is pretty bad but at least you don't bump into them around every corner!

Bless when my ds1 was little he was obsessed by cars and car parts, he would point pout 'zaust pipes' (exhaust pipes) every time we went passed a car...which was a lot and number plates etc etc...

JassyRadlett · 02/09/2013 12:05

Heh. Mine was doors. It's a 20 minute walk to nursery through an entirely residential area.

'Door! Door! Door! Door!'

I was so glad when he learned colours.

Weegiemum · 02/09/2013 12:06

When my ds was two, he had 2 favourite words: "bin" and "stick".

Putting sticks in bins was the perfect pleasure!

celticclan · 02/09/2013 12:47

My ds is like this too when he was about 18 months old he would run up to the bins and hug them. Hmm

He is 3 now and not so obsessed but still likes them a little too much for my liking. When on holiday the first thing he does is investigate the bin situation.

primallass · 02/09/2013 12:48

My DS was obsessed with clocks. Problem is he used to shout 'COCK' every time he saw one ...

WafflyVersatile · 02/09/2013 12:49

My dad's very similar with skips.

StanleyLambchop · 02/09/2013 14:05

With my DD it was gravel, we would have to stop numerous times and examine the different types as we were walking. Sometimes she would 'steal' it from driveways, it was embarrassing. She seems to be over it now, although she did fill her pockets with pebbles from the beach on holiday, so clearly has some relapses!

DeWe · 02/09/2013 14:20

We had that with dog poo (or fox/cat/anything else poo) for a while. It could be worse Grin

BobbyGentry · 02/09/2013 14:31

As a toddler, my sister's son would shout out, 'lawn-mower,' at the top of his voice. He's 21 now and doesn't anymore so don't worry.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/09/2013 14:50

With DS every flipping worm was called "Tommy".
When we walked in the rain, you can imagine how many Tommys we saw.

Wait until you have to shield his eyes in M&S ladies lingerie dept. It's like Father Ted Grin
DS had a fear of being trapped there "Mummy cover my eyes" he shrieked.
Then when he got older he'd declare his eyes "were bleeding" at some of the more exotic undies.

I haven't taken him past Ann Summers. He might combust.

DropYourSword · 02/09/2013 14:52

These are all awesome!

Boaty · 02/09/2013 15:08

DS2 shouted 'pub' whenever we drove past one when he was 2ish. Grin we remind him frequently of it now he is grown up

Faerieinatoadstool · 02/09/2013 15:15

Ok dewe you win with poo!
Why "tommy" 70?
We have sudden collapses to grab stones, luckily he hasn't mastered pockets yet

With my DS (2) it's postboxes. "Bo-box!" He hugs them too, asks to touch them etc. It's a treat to have something to post, and I return previous occupants' mail return to sender, so we have a few things to go in.
Actually he is kind of moving off post boxes onto holly. There is tons of holly growing in our area, and we have to stop by it frequently to discuss how it could 'her chew?'.

Whereisegg · 02/09/2013 17:00

My ds was obsessed with tractors at age 2ish.

We live in a very arable part of the country, and yet the twentieth tractor of the day would merit the same excited scream as the first.

I often worried people would think I never let him out of the house, hence his hysterical excitement.
