Am I being PFB?

Going over seas to visit family. MIL is being great and organising lots of stuff for us as it is not feasible for us to take things- e.g. Car seat, a bouncy chair (his favourite thing) and cot amongst other things. However I have asked her to send dims for the mattress, so we could get a new one to put in the cot. It would seem to be an unusual size so I can't find one. Am I being unreasonable to suggest that we keep that borrowed cot as a downstairs play area where she has dogs (as do we so no dog issue but these dogs have never encountered a baby before) and just order a travel cot with mattress so we know it is new and it all fits together for upstairs for actual sleeping? Or am I over thinking the whole thing and should just use this borrowed travel cot and mattress?
Our history is 4 miscarriages for me, with my older sibling lost to SIDs; I know that has no direct medical bearing for this baby but just to explain some anxiety.

YANBU.Never ever put a baby in a cot with an ill-fitting mattress. Many babies have died that way

Tee2072 · 01/09/2013 20:49

How old is the baby? You should definitely have a new mattress, actually. Age of baby is irrelevant.

What size is the cot and where is MIL? Perhaps there's a local MNetter who can help?

ElphabaTheGreen · 01/09/2013 20:51

YANBU. Travel cots aren't that expensive and come in handy as a playpen. Just get a new one and tell your MIL you were in the market for one for the longer term anyway so may as well get one now for the holiday, without having to explain your (perfectly reasonable, given the circs) anxieties.

dollywashers · 01/09/2013 20:51

How long are you going for? Could the baby sleep in with you?

LocoParentis · 01/09/2013 20:52

Order the travel cot with mattress. You'll worry about it the whole time if you don't and it's quite frankly not worth the risk.

Your MIL will understand i'm sure

Bluestocking · 01/09/2013 20:54

Not PFB at all - there's no way I would have put DS in a cot with a mattress that didn't fit properly. A travel cot is a really useful piece of kit anyway.

boardingschoolbaby · 01/09/2013 20:59

I am going for 5 days. She is very lovely, and being vey accommodating but like everything, things have changed since she had her babies so she clearly thinks this is a worry too far on my part and that I am being unreasonable. However she has another grandchild on the way so my thinking is that if we were to but a main brand one to leave with them then his sister could just get an extra mattress and use it too if she wanted to fly over to them.

How old is your DC?

CaptainCapybara · 01/09/2013 21:05

I would get another travel cot for sleeping but tbh I wouldn't make the SIL get her own mattress for it, I would just let both babies use it when they need it with a waterproof mattress protector that is washed between uses.

boardingschoolbaby · 01/09/2013 21:09

He is 3 months old.

Right, think I will just bite the bullet and order one and just suck up the pained looks for my own peace of mind. Thank you for reassuring me that I wasn't being potty over this.

your solution sounds perfectly fine to me however just wanted to add that we ordered all out cot and Moses basket mattresses made to measure from Baby Wise (on iPad, hope link works). Not affiliated with them in anyway but have now bough several made to measure mattresses from them and been very happy.

lastnightidreamt · 01/09/2013 21:18

No, you are not being PFB at all.

Just order the travel cot.

(I am the least PFB person ever!)

mameulah · 01/09/2013 21:20

Make a big fuss of being pfb about this and laugh it off. I had the same issue with our pfb ds when he was six months old. I asked the hv about it and she said it was to do with the way the baby lies in the cot and their weight. I absolutely would not feel at all bad about it.

MammaTJ · 01/09/2013 21:26

I am more than relaxed about my DC but you are right about this!

Fresh01 · 01/09/2013 21:29

Just say you had already bought a travel cot for visiting people and you will bring it with you.

We got a Phil and Teds travel cot for visiting people as we were flying a lot. It fits together very quickly but collapses into a small bag and only weighs about 4kg so easy to put in a holdall for flying. It has an inflatable matress. It is sturdy enough for toddlers. Gives you peace of mind.

boardingschoolbaby · 01/09/2013 21:40

Thank you you fresh and nightfall, I will have a look at those.
