So we have been on holiday in accommodation used by other family members. Earlier on in the week we went swimming. I put the washing machine on when i got back. (d)h had a moan because i put washing machine on. Think mil may have had a moan about electricity bill as i used tumble dryer last time but only guessing.
So after our last swim of holiday dh got back before me and put out towels to dry on balcony.
These towels were than put away for next ones down to use.
Aibu to think they should have been washed.
Now i know i should have said something but i couldn't face another arguument.
It has not been our best holiday ever but that would be another thread on two.
Aibu and too fussy.

we have similar situation. Holiday house shared by family - so my brothers family were there before us and my uncle afterwards.

We can't do all the washing, you can't leave in the morning and wash all your sheets and towels.
We have a system that you leave them on top of the washing machine and the next person does them (so you wash someones and they wash yours)

But funnily enough the swimming towels people seem to treat differently, they use them dry them and dump them back on the pile. I hate it. I always wash ours after the last swim so they are clean for the next person. (and I have been known to wash enough for us when we arrive just in case they haven't been done!)

RandomMess · 01/09/2013 18:29

Ewwwwwwwwwwwww I'm not a clean freak.

But yes towels need washing after going swimming - either covered in sand/beach or chemicals.

And yes I reuse my towel for many days but no-one else is allowed to touch it, clean towels!

2rebecca · 01/09/2013 18:30

In this case I'd have washed them and hung them on a rack to dry or if there are alot of towels put them on the machine with a note saying they need washing so they can be washed and hung out by the next person. Within our family we usually just hang oput/ hang up towels and wash them once a week. Swimming costumes get rinsed and hung out. Wahing them alot ruins the lycra.

TobyLerone · 01/09/2013 18:32

YANBU. They definitely should have been washed.

DuelingFanjo · 01/09/2013 18:32

I wouldn't wash towels after swimming if I was going to be the o e to use them but I would if they were for the next lot of guests.

steppemum · 01/09/2013 18:47

Oh I forgot to say, the swimming towels get used all week round the pool and then washed at the end of the stay, you can't wash them every time you go swimming, we are in and out of the pool all day, with the towels drying in the sun.

It is washing them between guests which matters

Lweji · 01/09/2013 19:12

I'd certainly have washed them (definitely not clean freak) and if I had been the next people in I would have thought they had been.

As a future note, in your place I'd wash any towels I and the children used before first use, if that's how they do things in that family...

If you are still there, I might stick a note apologising that the towels were not washed. :)

Yonionekanobe · 01/09/2013 19:19

We have a similar set up with my family and with DH's. DH's family holiday house is in the UK so we take sheets, towels etc. and avoid this but I always make sure the place is clean.

Slightly different with my parents' place as may have flights to catch so we have a similar system to steppemum's family or we can pay extra to the lady who looks after the house when noone is going to be there for a while to wash and remake beds.

Turniptwirl · 01/09/2013 19:22

I am the opposite of clean freak but would never leave dirty towels for someone else to use thinking they're clean, that's gross!

They don't need washing while on holiday and being used by the same person, but absolutely do before you leave!

EBearhug · 01/09/2013 19:25

I wash towels after the beach, but swimming towels that have just been to the swimming pool wait till the next wash.

I don't share towels, not even with someone I've slept with, illogical as that may be, and I have separate towels for swimming. Actually, I need a new swimming towel. The current ones date back to school (it's still got my name tape on it), and are nearly 30 years old, and I noticed when I took one off the line after the last wash that it's starting to fray along the edges. Things just aren't made to last these days. Smile

pointythings · 01/09/2013 19:27

I'd definitely have washed the towels if they were going to be for the use of a different group of people, family or not. And I'm a complete slob.

NorfolkIngWay · 01/09/2013 19:34

Grim and very selfish.
I would have told DH off and washed the towels while giving him the look Hmm

stillbusy84 · 01/09/2013 20:09

Fortunately i have just found out we are down next without (d)h so they will be washed.

RePUGnant!

The only family member I would share any towel with would be DH and that would be under great duress. If I took a towel from a cupboard, used it, then discovered it had not been washed since its last use by, say, my FIL, I would take a running jump into a vat of bleach then phone my MIL to find out what the fuck she was playing at.

Ugh.

Rufus43 · 01/09/2013 20:53

Definitely washed at the end of your stay, I would assume that towels for general use were clean when I turned up

If I found they weren't later I would not be a happy bunny

marriedinwhiteisback · 01/09/2013 21:04

They should have been washed. Did you leave the sinks, bath, bogs, etc, spotless? >>Shudders

Beastofburden · 01/09/2013 21:04

Quite apart from being grubby, those towels we also put away a bit damp, s they will grow mould as well. DH needs to get a grip FFS, what is the cost of a washing machine cycle when he is getting a free holiday? Has he even seen what the rest of the world has to pay to rent a holiday place.???

AllDirections · 01/09/2013 22:13

I would know if I took out a 'clean' towel and it had already been used. I would have to wash all the dirty towels and any of the clean towels that had also been contaminated touched by the dirty ones.

MajesticWhine · 01/09/2013 22:17

YANBU, yes of course they should have been washed. You are not being fussy, that's yuk.
